Two of MLB's wealthiest teams appear to be competing for one of the offseason's top free agents.
The Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees are "both playing" for shortstop Corey Seager, according to MLB Network's Jon Heyman.
Seager has made it known he'd like to return to the Dodgers after spending the first seven seasons of his career with the organization. But Los Angeles could replace him with Trea Turner after acquiring Turner in a trade last season. The Yankees, meanwhile, have a void at shortstop after opting to move Gleyber Torres back to second base on a regular basis.
Seager, 27, is one of the top free agents available this winter after another stellar campaign with the Dodgers. He hit .306/.394/.521 with 16 home runs, 22 doubles, and 57 RBIs, missing over two months of play because of a fractured hand.
The 2020 World Series MVP has been one of the most productive players at his position since 2016, ranking second in wRC+, fifth in slugging percentage, and sixth in fWAR among big-league shortstops, according to FanGraphs.
The native of North Carolina is reportedly one of several big-name players expected to sign a new deal before MLB's collective bargaining agreement expires on Dec. 1.
