<p>Pittsburgh Pirates manager Derek Shelton has the full support of general manager Ben Cherington, who believes the skipper will continue in the same role next season.</p><p>"(Shelton is the) right person to manage this team in 2025," the GM said Wednesday, according to <a href="https://x.com/KevinGormanPGH/status/1833889615612125383">Kevin Gorman of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review</a>.</p><p>Shelton has never had a winning season or made the playoffs during his Pittsburgh tenure, but the club's winning percentage has improved every year he's been on the job. <p>The Baltimore Orioles are struggling, and injured infielder <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///mlb/players/12662" href="https://thescore.com/mlb/players/12662">Jordan Westburg</a> believes it's affecting the mentality of the clubhouse during the final stretch run toward the postseason.</p><p>"I mean, losing sucks, right? Morale is down when you lose and we've been kind of doing a lot of it recently," Westburg said, according to <a href="https://www.baltimoresun.com/2024/09/11/orioles-frustration-inconsistent-play-clubhouse-morale/">The Baltimore Sun's Matt Weyrich</a>.</p><p>"I'm not going to spare words, we haven't been playing well in all facets of the game. So, yeah, it sucks. We're all down a little bit. Guys, I think, are searching and putting a lot of pressure on themselves to right the ship. But deep down, I think we all have this confidence that we're a good ballclub. We have the pieces to make a run."</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>The Orioles entered the All-Star break 20 games above .500. They appeared to be one of baseball's best teams as they battled atop the American League East division with the New York Yankees. The second half of the season hasn't been as pleasant, however, with the Orioles losing as many games as they've won (25-25).</p><p>Baltimore has been riddled with injuries to key players, including Westburg, who is sidelined with a broken hand. It's also struggling to stay consistent. When the pitching goes well, the offense struggles, and vice versa.</p><p>"I think it just comes down to trusting ourselves, really going out there and just worrying about putting a good product on the field together pitch by pitch," Westburg said.</p><p>"If we get down early, who cares? We're going to find a way. That needs to be the mentality, and if we're up, alright, let's step on somebody's throat. I think right now that's kind of what needs to happen as a whole. There just needs to be a little bit of, 'OK, we don’t care what the noise is. We don't care what happens during the game. Just find a way.' So, hopefully we can do that."</p><p>The Orioles enter Wednesday attempting to take a series from the Boston Red Sox and reclaim the division lead from the Yankees, who are a half-game ahead of them in the standings.</p><p> </p>

<p>Bob Melvin is disappointed about his first year as manager of the San Francisco Giants and didn't mince words in describing how things have gone for him and the club this season.</p><p>"This is the signature team in the Bay Area. This is everything I've dreamed of coming in here. And so for it not to go well - and my expectation was that it would go well - makes it probably the hardest year I've had," he told <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5754038/2024/09/09/sf-giants-bob-melvin-season-lookback/?source=tw_c_sf">The Athletic's Andrew Baggarly</a>.</p><p>The Giants pried the Palo Alto, California, native away from the San Diego Padres to manage his home state club last October. The hire came with heavy expectations from a San Francisco front office that dished out nearly $250 million in player salaries in the offseason.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>The results haven't been there, however, with the Giants 7.5 games back of the final NL wild-card spot.</p><p>This is the second consecutive season a team managed by Melvin has performed below expectations after the high-payroll Padres missed the playoffs last year. </p><p>While Melvin agreed his 2023 campaign with the Padres was a tough pill to swallow, he also admitted this year has been more difficult because of his ties to the Bay Area.</p><p>"Last year was hard in San Diego because of what we accomplished the year before. But this year was more personal because it's San Francisco," he said.</p><p>"So in that respect, this has been a very difficult year for me. Now, it's not over. There's still a lot to accomplish with some of the younger players and the guys that we have leading into next year. But there are nights when it's very uncomfortable for me."</p><p>The three-time Manager of the Year is signed until the end of the 2026 campaign to manage the Giants, who have 18 games remaining on this year's schedule.</p><p> </p>

(AP) — Joey Logano raced his way into the second round of NASCAR's playoffs by winning the opener in overtime Sunday at Atlanta Motor Speedway. </p><p>Logano, the only two-time Cup Series champion in the 16-driver playoff field, earned an automatic berth into the next round of races. It was the 11th race of the season to end in overtime — a tie for the record set in the 2017 season. </p><p>“That’s how we start the playoffs, boys!” Logano shouted. “When it is playoff time, it is our time.”</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Logano is trying to become the only active three-time Cup champion. Kyle Busch, who did not make the playoffs, is the only other driver with two Cup titles. </p><p>Ryan Blaney finished second in a 1-2 sweep for Team Penske and Ford. Blaney lined up behind Logano and gave him the pushes he needed to deny Daniel Suarez the victory. </p><p>Suarez, who won the closest three-wide finish in NASCAR history here in February, had his own help from Trackhouse Racing teammate Ross Chastain. The two-lap overtime sprint to the finish began with Logano and Suarez lined up side-by-side on the front row, each with their teammate behind them for the push to the front. </p><p>Blaney got Logano out first, but Chastain remained locked onto the bumper of Suarez's Chevrolet and the two dueled it out until Blaney used a final push to get his Penske teammate the win. </p><p>Christopher Bell in a Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing finished fourth, and Alex Bowman in a Chevrolet for Hendrick Motorsports was fifth. Regular-season champion Tyler Reddick of 23XI Racing was sixth and followed by Busch of Richard Childress Racing, Chase Elliott of Hendrick, William Byron of Hendrick and Austin Cindric of Penske. Only two Toyotas — Bell and Reddick — finished inside the top 10. </p><hl2>Larson crashes early </hl2><p>Larson running third in the closing laps of the first stage when his car inexplicably shot into the outside wall. </p><p>“I don't know if I blew a tire or what,” Larson radioed. </p><p>As the No. 5 Chevrolet shot back down the track, Larson was hit in the rear by fellow playoff driver Chase Briscoe. That contact caused damage to Briscoe's Ford. </p><p>The incident ended the race for both drivers. </p><p>Larson was the points leader at the start of Sunday before his crash, which he called one of the hardest hits of his career and it came without any warning. </p><p>“No, not at all. Never. Not once," Larson said. “It just caught me way off guard. I was never once loose, even in that corner. And then, it just started stepping out. I corrected it and overcorrected it, I guess. I feel fine. Thankfully, everything held up great in the car.”</p><p>Briscoe, who won last week's regular-season finale to make the playoff field, was ranked 13th out of 16 at the start of the race. </p><p>“That’s NASCAR — you can be on top one week and you can be at the very bottom of the mountain the next week," said Briscoe, who added he was fortunate not to be injured. "It was a big hit. One of the biggest hits I’ve had in a long time. My private area hurt pretty bad at first, just when I hit it was a big hit, but, other than that, I’m totally good. </p><p>"My head, everything feels fine. I’m glad my ankles didn’t get messed up. The brake pedal and everything went through the floorboard, so I’m thankful that I’m alright, for sure.”</p><hl2>Up Next</hl2><p>The road course in Watkins Glen, New York, makes its debut in the 10-race playoff schedule next Sunday. Good defender. Has some pop. He's a good athlete. So we'll (see) what happens in the upcoming days, and then we'll know more."</p><p>The 29-year-old has been with Triple-A Worcester since late June after being optioned to the minors.</p><p>Over parts of five seasons in the majors, Dalbec has posted a .714 OPS with 47 homers and nine steals over 331 contests. <p>New York Yankees left-hander <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///mlb/players/9727" href="https://thescore.com/mlb/players/9727">Nestor Cortes</a> wasn't happy he had to pitch out of the bullpen during Saturday's 2-0 win over the Chicago Cubs.</p><p>"Obviously, I was upset," Cortes said, according to <a href="https://x.com/BryanHoch/status/1832537450796798326">MLB.com's Bryan Hoch</a>. </p><p>"I feel like, amongst all the starters, I've been the workhorse here. Once (Gerrit) Cole went down, they picked me to be the Opening Day starter; not necessarily the No. 1, but the Opening Day starter. I had to switch my routine there, and now they do this."</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Cortes followed <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///mlb/players/9586" href="https://thescore.com/mlb/players/9586">Clarke Schmidt</a> during Saturday's game, pitching 4 1/3 hitless innings after Schmidt shut out the Cubs across 4 2/3 frames in his first start since May 26. His return meant the Yankees rostered more than the traditional five starters.</p><p>Yankees manager Aaron Boone previously said he was unsure how he'd use six starters in a five-man rotation when Schmidt returned. Cortes, who was roughed up in his last start against the St. Louis Cardinals, appeared to be the odd man out.</p><p>But the 29-year-old admitted that, even though it upset him, he'd continue to pitch in relief if asked.</p><p>"I'm never going to back down from a challenge, I'm never going to leave my teammates out to dry," Cortes said. </p><p>"You're always going to get my best effort, no matter if I'm happy or not. That's what I did today. I just came out there and proved that I can be put in any situation, and from here on out, if that's what's my role, then I'll accept it."</p><p>Boone said Sunday that Cortes' comments didn't bother him, and the southpaw would move back into the rotation, according to <a href="https://x.com/BryanHoch/status/1832835420469518720">Hoch</a>.</p><p>Cortes owns a 3.97 ERA and 1.15 WHIP in 163 1/3 innings this season.</p>

"You want to be out there with your guys. I think I'm fine with that."</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Ohtani spent the first six years of his career with the Angels, winning two AL MVPs and 2018 AL Rookie of the Year honors while making the All-Star team three times.</p><p>Despite his success, Angels owner Arte Moreno was reportedly unwilling to match the Dodgers' offer, which was similar to ones made by the San Francisco Giants and Toronto Blue Jays.</p><p>Ohtani didn't provide much of a comment when asked if he was surprised the Angels didn't match the other offers.</p><p>"Regarding that, nothing in particular," he said. "I think other teams, including the Dodgers, evaluated me highly. Rather than think about what the Angels did or didn't do, I'm grateful for the teams that evaluated me highly."</p><p>Ohtani will return to Anaheim for the first time in a Dodgers uniform Tuesday.</p><p>The 30-year-old is in the midst of another brilliant season, attempting to become the first player in MLB history to hit 50 home runs and steal 50 bases.</p>
