Fenway Park may get $4M renovation, replace Pesky's Pole

Landmarks Commission/Environmental Office / Boston Herald

Boston Red Sox owners are looking into an estimated $4 million in renovation plans that would bring more dugout seating, new suites, a right-field grandstand bar, and a removable bullpen field wall so FIFA soccer and college football games could be played.

The documents, filed with the city's Landmarks Commission, were acquired by the Boston Herald's Donna Goodison and Bob McGovern, though Red Sox representatives remained quiet on the subject.

“It would be premature to discuss publicly any proposed changes to the ballpark at this early stage, as we are still reviewing options internally and awaiting review and analysis from various city organizations, including the Landmarks Commission," Red Sox spokeswoman Zineb Curran told the Herald.

The dugout seating would include 110 infield seats and 14 in the outfield. It calls for replacing the existing wall and extending the dugout and camera pits.

Pesky's Pole also may be no more if the plans go through as submitted. The foul pole, which honors late player Johnny Pesky, would be replaced. The Red Sox would also install a new 15-by-42.5-foot LED video board in place of the Cumberland Farms sign in right field.

Fenway's proposed grandstand bar would replace six to seven rows at the top of the seating area to accommodate bar rails and stools for 92 people. The existing seating area accommodates 459 people.

“The seats … face toward the Green Monster rather than toward the field of play,” Red Sox documents read. “The views are awkward and not ideal.”

Red Sox owner John Henry owns England's Liverpool Football Club in the Premier League and Fenway has hosted "friendly" matches in the past. With Major League Soccer's New England Revolution looking for a new home, Fenway's renovations might be of interest.
