Detroit Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin recently requested a trade, sources told Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman.

Larkin, his agent Pat Brisson, and Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman wouldn't comment on the matter to Friedman.

A Michigan native, Larkin has spent his entire 11-year career in Detroit but hasn't reached the playoffs since his 2015-16 rookie campaign. The Red Wings' 10-year postseason drought is the longest active skid in the league.

Friction between Larkin and Detroit's front office had been building for a while, but it came to a head after the team missed the playoffs this season, sources told ESPN's Emily Kaplan. After the Red Wings were eliminated from postseason contention, Larkin said, "I'm as down as I could be."

Larkin was notably critical of the Red Wings' front office for not making any significant additions at the 2025 trade deadline, even though the team was just a point out of the playoffs. "We didn't gain any momentum from the trade deadline, and guys were kind of down about it," Larkin said at the time.

The Red Wings added Justin Faulk at the 2026 deadline but still went 6-10-3 after the trade to miss the playoffs.

Larkin has served as Detroit's No. 1 center for nearly a decade. He tallied 34 goals and 33 assists in 74 games this season and has averaged 77 points per 82 games over the last five years.

The 29-year-old ranks 10th on the Red Wings' all-time list in goals (276) and points (643). The club drafted him 15th overall in 2014.

He's under contract for five more seasons with an $8.7-million cap hit. His pact includes a full no-trade clause for the next two years.

Larkin helped the United States win gold at the 2026 Olympics, producing two goals and one assist in six games. He also represented Team USA at the 2025 4 Nations Face-Off.

Detroit's center depth behind Larkin includes Andrew Copp, J.T. Compher, Michael Rasmussen, Marco Kasper, and Nate Danielson.
