And spoiler alert: It probably won't be in Vancouver.This isn't exactly breaking news, but Jack, the New Jersey Devils' superstar center, <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3341811" href="https://thescore.com/news/3341811">said</a> out loud what many have long assumed.<div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div>"Honestly, I'm not afraid to say it. Yeah, I would love for Quinn to - eventually I'd love to play with him," Jack told reporters at the NHL/NHLPA player media tour Tuesday. "And whether that's in New Jersey or at what time that takes, at some point, I want to play with Quinn. But yeah, that's the question going around. They talk all day about it up in Vancouver, you know? But yeah, I'd love to play with Quinn at some point."Quinn, unsurprisingly, <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3342391" href="https://thescore.com/news/3342391">downplayed</a> Jack's comments on Wednesday.But why wouldn't Jack want Quinn as a teammate? Playing in the NHL with your brothers is something you grow up dreaming about. Beyond the family ties, Quinn, who turns 26 in October, is firmly in the conversation for the sport's best defenseman. He won the Norris Trophy in 2024 and was a finalist last season despite missing 14 games with injury. Any player should want him on their team, let alone his brother.Canucks president of hockey operations Jim Rutherford knows it, too. The veteran executive admitted in April that retaining the team's captain would be easier "if we brought his brothers here."That's a pipe dream, though. Jack, 24, has five years left on his contract at an extremely team-friendly $8-million average annual value. Luke, the youngest of the brothers at 22, is a restricted free agent but remains under team control in New Jersey until 2030.On the other hand, Quinn is two years away from unrestricted free agency. He could easily force his way out of Vancouver by refusing to sign an extension when he becomes eligible on July 1, 2026. At that point, the Canucks would have no choice but to move him. That could be the best of both worlds: Quinn gets to see things through in Vancouver but still has a clear path to playing with his brothers down the line.However, if the Canucks falter and miss the playoffs again, as they did last season, Quinn's decision becomes a lot easier: stick around with a mediocre team that's stagnating at best, or chase a Stanley Cup with his brothers on an ascending Devils squad? That seems like a no-brainer.One thing is clear: the noise in Vancouver surrounding Quinn's potential departure will only grow louder if the team gets off to a slow start.That puts ample pressure on the Canucks to come out of the gates hot in 2025-26, which is easier said than done for a club with a first-time head coach in Adam Foote and major question marks at center, right defense, and in net.It's far from an ideal situation to navigate off the hop, especially for a squad that was clearly affected by last season's rift between Elias Pettersson and J.T. Miller. Can the Canucks block out the noise this time? The answer might be the difference between extending or trading the organization's franchise player a year from now.

The question the Hurricanes would have to answer is whether the upgrade is worth the acquisition cost. We say yes. Karlsson's ceiling is so much higher, and he would help a power play that ranked 25th in the NHL a year ago and has often gone cold come playoff time. Getting him at $8 million per season for the final two years of his deal would carry little risk.It's also possible that playing alongside Jaccob Slavin helps some of Karlsson's defensive deficiencies. Slavin has routinely elevated his partners, including Brett Pesce, Tony DeAngelo, and most recently, Brent Burns. Swapping out Gostisbehere for Karlsson would also give the Hurricanes perfect lefty-righty harmony on the backend. K'Andre Miller could anchor a second pair with Jalen Chatfield, while rookie Alexander Nikishin could be brought in slowly on the third pair with Sean Walker.Why it makes sense for Pittsburgh: The first-round pick doesn't project to be very high, as Carolina is a legitimate Cup contender, but it's still a first-rounder. The Penguins could also flip Gostisbehere, who's under contract for two more years at a team-friendly $3.2-million cap hit, for additional assets. Getting involved in the Karlsson sweepstakes would make sense, but if they can't work out a deal, Rust would be a nice consolation prize. The Pontiac, Michigan, native would provide the Red Wings with the additional top-six winger they're lacking, giving them a legitimately deep crop of forwards. Detroit's farm system is rich enough that it should be OK parting with a first-round pick for immediate help. Rust, 33, is under contract for three more years at $5.125-million annually.Why it makes sense for Pittsburgh: Even if this first-round pick transfers to 2027, it could be decently high if the Red Wings continue on their mediocre trajectory. Berggren is also an intriguing, young player who could benefit from the increased playing time he'd likely receive for the rebuilding Penguins. While he's not the center the Canucks have been searching for, adding a legitimate top-six winger to a forward group that severely lacks high-end talent outside of Elias Pettersson and Brock Boeser would be a good start. Rakell, 32, is a physical two-way winger under contract for three more years with a $5-million cap hit. He'd be a massive upgrade over Hoglander, who scored just eight goals last year and is under contract for three more years at $3 million annually.Why it makes sense for Pittsburgh: Hoglander is still just 24 years old and one season removed from a 24-goal campaign. Although that season could prove to be an outlier in his career, Hoglander is the type of young player the Penguins should be willing to take a gamble on. Maybe he could regain his prior form playing alongside Crosby or Malkin? Kudryavtsev, meanwhile, is a developmental success story for the Canucks, cracking the NHL last year despite being a seventh-round pick in 2022. "I actually asked him during the season, and he said he was concentrating on Toronto. I didn't want to press him on that and let him be because it was obviously on his mind, but his play was focused on helping us. Then I asked him after the season, and he wasn't sure."Marner joined the Vegas Golden Knights this offseason on an eight-year, $96-million contract following a sign-and-trade with the Maple Leafs.<div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div>During his introductory <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W747Owawb3k">press conference</a> in Vegas, Marner admitted that things began to go south in Toronto when trade rumors started swirling about two years ago.While the Maple Leafs tried to extend Marner before the 2025 trade deadline, they apparently also explored their options. Toronto reportedly attempted to send the 28-year-old to the Carolina Hurricanes in a deal that would've shipped <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/4772" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/4772">Mikko Rantanen</a> to Toronto, but Marner used his no-movement clause to nix the trade. A separate three-team deal involving the Hurricanes and Golden Knights was reportedly discussed, with Rantanen heading to Toronto and Marner to Vegas. However, Carolina and Vegas were unable to find the necessary assets to complete the trade."It's tough seeing him go, but I'm so happy for him and his family," Nylander said. "He got to pick where he went, so, in that aspect, I'm happy for him. We're going to miss him a lot, but that's just the business of the sport. That's the way it is.
