Kevin Durant says he wants to own his favorite NFL team

Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

As a native of the D.C. suburbs, it's no surprise that Kevin Durant's favorite football team is the Washington Redskins. And as many fans of the franchise would, after years of mostly success-free stewardship under Daniel Snyder, Durant probably wishes somebody else owned the team.

In Durant's case, that would be himself. The Oklahoma City Thunder superstar opened up about some potential post-basketball business to ESPN's Matthew Berry:

My first priority (to own a team) would be the Washington Redskins, even if it was just a small percentage. I just want to get involved. Growing up five minutes away from the stadium and always being a fan, I have a Redskins tattoo on my forearm. So I feel part of the team so much, so to be an owner and all the way entrenched with the team would be cool.

Top professional athletes today make more than enough money to eventually become part of franchise ownership groups; Magic Johnson began the trend years ago, and now other former NBA legends like Michael Jordan and Shaquille O'Neal own the majority of, or pieces of, basketball teams. The NFL still remains the gold standard however, with an average franchise value of approximately $2 billion, according to Forbes.

Durant's views on the Redskins' naming controversy are not known, but for the moment, fans can only fantasize about exchanging Snyder for the 27-year-old, six-time NBA All-Star.
