Rootes steps down as Texans president
More changes are underway in Houston as Texans president Jamey Rootes resigned Wednesday.
"I think the organization is in a great place from a business perspective. We’ve got a great leadership team. I thought the time was right for me to do something different," Rootes said Wednesday, according to John McClain of The Houston Chronicle.
"I’m young enough to find a new opportunity to create something new."
Rootes has been with the Texans for more than 20 years. Houston promoted him to team president in 2005, and he oversaw all business functions during his tenure.
The Texans' front office reconstruction is being questioned by many within the organization and around the league, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. Houston recently dismissed its director of football administration and equipment manager earlier this month.
Rootes didn't meet with new Texans general manager Nick Caserio during the hiring process last month, Sports Illustrated's Jenny Vrentas and Greg Bishop report.
Houston has typically included Rootes in head coach and general manager searches in previous years, McClain adds.
The Texans are also embroiled in a stand-off with quarterback Deshaun Watson after he reportedly submitted a trade request.
