<p>The San Francisco 49ers are hiring former Atlanta Falcons head coach Raheem Morris as their defensive coordinator, sources told <a href="https://x.com/AdamSchefter/status/2018049233354403926?s=20">ESPN's Adam Schefter</a>.</p><p>Morris replaces Robert Saleh, who became the head coach of the Tennessee Titans.</p><p>This will mark the fourth time that Morris and 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan are part of the same NFL coaching staff. They previously served together in Tampa Bay (2004-2005), Washington (2012-2013), and Atlanta (2015-2016), according to <a href="https://x.com/AdamSchefter/status/2018050611825246706?s=20">Schefter</a>.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Morris is coming off a two-year tenure as the coach of the Falcons, in which he produced a 16-18 record with no playoff appearances. He went 8-9 in each of those seasons. This was the second time Morris coached the Falcons, as he had an 11-game stint as the interim coach in 2020 and went 4-7.</p><p>The 49-year-old coach was the Los Angeles Rams' defensive coordinator for three seasons between 2021 and 2023.</p><p>Morris was also the head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for three seasons from 2009 through 2011, producing a 17-31 mark.</p>

<p>The Arizona Cardinals hired Los Angeles Rams offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur as their new head coach, the team announced Sunday.</p><p>"In his career, Mike has been around some of the best and brightest coaches in football and has been a key contributor to highly successful teams," Cardinals general manager Monti Ossenfort said in a <a href="https://www.azcardinals.com/news/cardinals-choose-mike-lafleur-as-new-head-coach-2026">statement</a>.</p><p>"He understands what winning football looks like and what it takes to achieve it. Mike is a strong communicator with a detail-oriented teaching style that has always gotten the best from his players, and we are incredibly excited for him to bring that to the Cardinals."</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>LaFleur's contract with the Cardinals is for five years.</p><p>With LaFleur heading to Arizona and Klint Kubiak <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3469409" href="https://thescore.com/news/3469409">reportedly</a> joining the Las Vegas Raiders, all of the NFL's head coaching vacancies are now filled.</p><p>LaFleur, the brother of Green Bay Packers coach Matt LaFleur, spent the last three seasons as the Rams' offensive coordinator under head coach Sean McVay. Los Angeles scored more points than any NFL team this campaign and has placed in the top 10 in scoring in two of LaFleur's three years with the franchise.</p><p>Prior to joining the Rams, LaFleur served as the New York Jets' offensive coordinator under Robert Saleh. He was also the passing game coordinator on Kyle Shanahan's staff in San Francisco from 2017 to 2020.</p><p>Arizona moved on from Jonathan Gannon earlier this season after the head coach couldn't build off of an 8-9 record in 2024. The Cardinals bottomed out in the NFC West with a 3-14 mark in 2025.</p>

While the test wasn't broadcast, there's still a lot to be taken from the event, which offered the first glimpse at the new 2026 cars and power units.</p><p>Here's what we learned from the Barcelona preseason shakedown.</p><h3>Mercedes, Ferrari have momentum </h3><p>Rumors and speculation prior to the event suggested that Mercedes is the favorite to open the 2026 season. And after a flawless week of running, it's clear why. The Silver Arrows were not only ahead of the pack in completing their testing program, they exceeded even their own expectations, according to team engineer Andrew Shovlin. Mercedes recorded more mileage than any other team - a testament to its superb reliability - and held the fastest lap when the team packed up after Thursday's session. George Russell left Barcelona saying how excited he is to reach Bahrain for the next set of testing and eventually go racing. While preseason numbers aren't everything, confidence is, and Mercedes left Barcelona with a ton of it.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>While Mercedes captured all the early buzz, Ferrari ended the week on strong footing. The Scuderia enjoyed a rather trouble-free shakedown that culminated in Lewis Hamilton setting the fastest lap of the week during the closing moments Friday. If it weren't for Mercedes, the possibility of a resurgent Prancing Horse would likely be front and center. But boy does Adrian Newey sure know how to design a car that gets everyone talking. The AMR26 features numerous elements that are fundamentally different compared to its rivals, including the rear suspension being <a href="https://x.com/F1GuyDan/status/2016955015789715727?s=20">attached</a> to the rear wing pylon, <a href="https://x.com/F1GuyDan/status/2016917120357925292?s=20">underbite</a> sidepod shape, and front wing. Although Isack Hadjar's crash Tuesday interrupted Red Bull's shakedown, the engine didn't cause the team any visible stress. Between Red Bull and Racing Bulls, the power unit compiled a whopping 624 laps of mileage.</p><h3>McLaren the big unknown</h3><p>There's not much to make of the reigning double champions after Barcelona. McLaren completed only 287 laps and encountered a fuel systems issue Thursday that ended its run prematurely. Mileage that leans on the lower side and a confirmed problem may seem like justified reasons for anxiety. But it's worth remembering that no team had a better track record with car development over the final years of the last regulation cycle. Audi and Cadillac should be applauded for getting a car on track this week, something that even a few established F1 teams struggled with. But the Barcelona shakedown only emphasized the enormous task facing Audi and especially Cadillac. Both teams battled their fair share of issues, with only Aston Martin ranking below Audi and Cadillac in laps completed. Cadillac driver Valtteri Bottas said the team still has "lots of problems to solve and a bit of a mountain to climb," while Audi's Mattia Binotto put it best, saying he's "never seen such a long list" of issues to remedy.</p><figure class="article-segment--embed"><blockquote class="twitter-tweet">

Williams announced days before the shakedown that it wouldn't be in Barcelona as it strives to "push for maximum car performance." James Vowles then said Wednesday that the team could have arrived late, but it would have jeopardized other parts of its development program. Previous crash test failures and weight concerns with its cars were dismissed as "murmurings." It's still early, but the setbacks don't inspire confidence, especially for a team that was vocal about 2026 being the start of its journey back to the top.</p><h3>New cars look great</h3><p>We still don't know if the new regulations will improve the wheel-to-wheel racing, but we certainly do know that the 2026 cars look a heck of a lot better than their predecessors. The new aerodynamic profiles - especially the front wings - really bring the cars alive, while the minor size and weight reductions seem to have made a difference too. From an aesthetic standpoint, there's no doubt that the 2026 cars are a much-needed upgrade.</p><figure class="article-segment--embed"><blockquote class="twitter-tweet">

The upcoming Formula 1 season, which brings the biggest regulation changes in over a decade, is shaping up to be a crucial crossroads for the Scuderia.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Ferrari needs 2026 to be its year. If it isn't, there's no telling what seismic consequences await.</p><p>The futures of Charles Leclerc, Lewis Hamilton, and team principal Fred Vasseur could very well hang in the balance. Another disappointing setback may cause all three to depart.</p><p>Leclerc, the crown jewel of the Ferrari project, has stood by the team with unwavering - and perhaps even foolish - loyalty. But the driver whom the Tifosi nicknamed "il Predestinato" (the Predestined One) is seemingly nearing the end of his patience with his first love.</p><p>Leclerc told <a href="https://www.skysports.com/f1/news/12433/13482219/ferrari-driver-charles-leclerc-warns-italian-team-its-now-or-never-for-them-to-deliver-ahead-of-new-2026-f1-rules">Sky Sports</a> in December that 2026 is a "now-or-never" year for Ferrari to capitalize on a fresh start. With rumors swirling in the Italian media that linked Leclerc to the likes of Aston Martin and Mercedes at the end of last season, Ferrari might be running out of chances to prove it can support Leclerc in a championship fight. The mechanisms in Leclerc's contract haven't been confirmed, but it's been <a href="https://www.the-race.com/formula-1/when-does-each-2025-f1-drivers-contract-expire/">speculated</a> that there's a way out after 2027.</p><p>While Leclerc might be headed for the door, Hamilton, whose contract length isn't known either, could perhaps be shown the door. While Hamilton's potentially declining traits may be a separate concern from Ferrari building a competitive car in 2026, the elements do overlap somewhat. When things are going great among the team and in the cockpit, Hamilton can rise to an almost untouchable level. But when there's no sign of optimism or hope, he's prone to downward spirals that are difficult to stop, much like in 2025.</p><p>The future of Vasseur, one of Hamilton's biggest supporters inside the team, is no clearer. There was already speculation within Italy last season that the French boss' job was in jeopardy before he was rewarded with a new multi-year contract. However, as we've come to know, contracts in F1 aren't worth the paper they're printed on.</p><p>As the man at the forefront of the Maranello base, Vasseur will be the first to answer for any issues in 2026. The results produced by the 57-year-old thus far have been a mixed bag. In 2023, he rejuvenated a Ferrari team that had lost its way under Mattia Binotto. He carried that momentum through 2024, when Ferrari finished 14 points shy of winning the constructors' title and grabbed an F1-high 22 podiums. But as the Tifosi have seen time and again, last year, when everything pointed to a Ferrari title fight, the team fell flat on its face, finishing fourth in the constructors' standings.</p><p>Vasseur got a pass, but Ferrari may not be so fortunate a second time around.</p><p><strong>Ferrari since 2014</strong></p><figure class="article-segment--table"><div class="table-responsive"><table>

Besides, there isn't a Hollywood script that could accurately capture the pandemonium if Leclerc were to end Ferrari's title drought or Hamilton were to eclipse the legendary Michael Schumacher with an eighth title.</p><p>That's partly why it's never been more critical for Ferrari to get it right. Another dud in 2026 won't just be a lost year. It would cloud the foreseeable future as Maranello attempts to catch up. For Leclerc, who could be looking at an eighth season in red without a championship, and the 41-year-old Hamilton, that position won't be good enough.</p><p>How many more years this iteration of Ferrari has together is yet to be determined. As Leclerc said, it's now or never. The Tifosi and decision-makers won't wait any longer. This needs to be Ferrari's year.</p>

<p>The Pittsburgh Steelers are open to <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nfl/players/747" href="https://thescore.com/nfl/players/747">Aaron Rodgers</a> returning for the 2026 season, but that didn't factor much into their decision to hire Mike McCarthy as head coach, team owner Art Rooney II said.</p><p>"We decided to bring Mike on because we believe that he's the right coach for us at this point to help lead us to a championship," Rooney told <a href="https://www.steelers.com/news/labriola-on-why-it-was-mike-mccarthy">team reporter Bob Labriola</a>. "We don't know what Aaron's plans are right now, and that did not weigh heavily in the decision. We'll see where Aaron is, and we've left the door open, but obviously we all have to sit down and see if that makes sense. So, that'll happen sometime in the next month or so.</p><p>"But the decision was made based on Mike being the coach we want, and it really had very little to do with whether Aaron is going to be back or not."</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Rodgers won 10 of his 16 starts with Pittsburgh this season, throwing for 24 touchdowns versus seven interceptions. The Steelers won the AFC North for the first time since 2020, though they lost in the wild-card round, with longtime head coach Mike Tomlin stepping down the following day.</p><p>The 62-year-old McCarthy, whom the Steelers made their fourth head coach since 1969 on Saturday, coached Rodgers for 13 seasons with the Green Bay Packers.</p><p><a href="https://thescore.com/nfl/players/83531">Mason Rudolph</a> and <a href="https://thescore.com/nfl/players/210204">Will Howard</a> are Pittsburgh's only quarterbacks currently under contract for next season. McCarthy apparently sees potential in Howard, who was a sixth-round pick in 2025.</p><p>"He likes Will Howard, thinks Will has tremendous upside, and is looking forward to working with him," Rooney added. "Obviously feels like Mason can be a contributor."</p><p>Rooney also defended McCarthy's hiring against criticism, pointing to his resume and experience coaching successful quarterbacks.</p><p>"He is someone who has a longer track record than many of the other candidates, a winning track record," Rooney said. "He's been a winner everywhere he's been. Probably just as important for our purposes, the quarterbacks that he's worked with have all been very successful. So, he has a proven track record of developing top flight quarterbacks. Those are the things that maybe stick out the most."</p><p>In addition to McCarthy, the Steelers held in-person interviews with just two candidates: Brian Flores and Anthony Weaver. Rooney said they didn't bring in more candidates because the franchise felt that it had identified its next coach.</p><p>"The message for our fans is: We're very excited," Rooney said. "We think we have a coach who is well-equipped to lead us into the next winning phase of Steelers football, and that's what it's all about. I think they're going to love Coach Mike."</p>

Hartline left the program to take South Florida's head coaching job.</p><p>The news comes after the Steelers hired Mike McCarthy as their new head coach. The franchise reportedly told staff members they were free to seek other jobs after former head coach Mike Tomlin resigned.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Smith was in the running for the Tennessee Titans' head coaching job and the Los Angeles Chargers' offensive coordinator role. A fourth-quarter touchdown pass to Andre Reed put them in front late, and while Houston managed to send the game to overtime, Buffalo emerged victorious by a score of 38-35. Reich passed for 289 yards and four touchdowns in a rally for the record books.</p><h3>Jeff Hostetler - Super Bowl XXV</h3><p>The New York Giants could've packed it in when Phil Simms broke his foot versus Buffalo in Week 15 of the 1990 season. Instead, Hostetler stepped up and guided New York to Super Bowl XXV, a rematch against the dynamic Bills. "Hoss" led the resilient Giants on an epic comeback featuring lengthy drives, finishing with 222 passing yards and a touchdown while completing 62.5% of his throws. The Grambling State product passed for 340 yards and four touchdowns in a 42-10 rout of the Denver Broncos and was awarded Super Bowl MVP.</p><h3>Earl Morrall - Super Bowl V</h3><p>The New York Jets embarrassed the Baltimore Colts' Morrall in Super Bowl III, intercepting him three times before he was benched. Two years later, the former league MVP got his chance at redemption when Johnny Unitas exited Super Bowl V due to a rib injury sustained during the second quarter. With the Colts trailing the Dallas Cowboys 13-6, Morrall keyed a fourth-quarter push and served as the placeholder for Jim O'Brien's game-winning field goal. He became the first quarterback - starter or backup - to lead a comeback victory in the Super Bowl.</p>

<p>The Indianapolis Colts confirmed Thursday that the FBI are investigating the death of former team owner Jim Irsay, according to <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/47697153/colts-say-fbi-aunched-probe-death-former-owner-jim-irsay">ESPN's Stephen Holder</a>. </p><p>The investigation centers on the potential involvement of Irsay's recovery doctor, Dr. Harry Haroutunian, who reportedly provided him with prescription pain pills and ketamine in his final months, Holder adds.</p><p>The FBI is seeking information about Irsay's death, his substance use, and his relationship with Haroutunian, according to a federal grand jury subpoena reviewed by Will Hobson, Albert Samaha, and Sam Fortier of <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2026/01/22/jim-irsay-death-fbi-addiction/">The Washington Post</a>.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Multiple people close to Irsay in Indianapolis were also reportedly interviewed by the FBI in January about the latter years of his life. </p><p>The Colts say the FBI hasn't reached out to them nor have they received any subpoenas, according to Holder.</p><p>Irsay, who battled addiction issues throughout his life, died at the age of 65 at a Beverly Hills Hotel in May 2025. Haroutunian was also at the hotel and helped Irsay with treatment before his death, according to The Washington Post. Cardiac arrest caused by pneumonia and heart issues were the reasons for Irsay's death, according to a death certificate reportedly signed by Haroutunian.</p><p>Irsay became the Colts' sole owner in 1997 after his father and former owner Rob passed away. He rose through the ranks within the organization, first becoming the youngest general manager in NFL history at the age of 24 in 1984 before taking over day-to-day operations in 1995.</p>
