Los Angeles Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn wanted to make a statement against his AFC West rival.
The Chargers overturned a 28-14 deficit with five minutes remaining to top the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday. The drama culminated in a bold decision to attempt a two-point conversion with four seconds left on the clock after scoring a touchdown and trailing by one point.
"We did not come here to tie," Lynn told reporters following the win, according to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk. "We came here to win. To me, (going for two) was a no-brainer."
Los Angeles moved to 11-3 with the victory and into a tie with the Chiefs atop the division. Although going for it all on the final play seemed like a tough decision, Lynn's mind was made up long before his team scored.
"We were going to go for two the whole time at the end of that game because I believe in those guys," he said. "(We) did not come here to tie. I want to win the game and they wanted to win the game, so that is why we did it."
Lynn added: "I told (offensive coordinator) Ken (Whisenhunt) if we get the ball and score, get your two-point play ready. We are going for it."
The Chargers will battle the Baltimore Ravens and Denver Broncos to end their season as they look to secure the top seed in the AFC - though the Chiefs currently hold the division tiebreaker.
