The CFL will not be an option for quarterback Brendan Sorsby in 2026.
The league announced Friday that its teams will not be given permission to sign Sorsby.
"Upholding the integrity of the league and ensuring fair competition are paramount to the CFL," the league said in a statement obtained by Farhan Lalji of TSN. "The allegations involving Brendan Sorsby are serious and concerning. At this time, the CFL will not register a contract for him, and no team will be permitted to add him to its negotiation list."
Sorsby, a former Cincinnati quarterback who joined Texas Tech earlier this offseason, was deemed ineligible to play college football in May after acknowledging he gambled on sports, including on his own team while at Indiana. He admitted to making thousands of wagers totaling upward of $90,000.
In June, Sorsby was slated to regain eligibility after a judge granted him a temporary injunction. However, this was met with widespread criticism from the college football world, and the Big 12 responded with a lawsuit in hopes of getting the right to enforce its bylaws and punish Sorsby. The passer applied for the NFL supplemental draft, but the league informed teams earlier this week that it would not hold the event in 2026.
Sorsby's attorney, Jeffrey Kessler, blasted the NFL's decision, calling it a "violation of the CBA and the law."
The CFL and NFL's blockage leaves Sorsby with dwindling options to play professional football in 2026. He's coming off a season in which he threw for 27 touchdowns to five interceptions at Cincinnati.
