Report: Cardinals' Contreras open to waiving NTC for right fit
St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Willson Contreras could be moved this offseason amid the club's roster purge.
Contreras has become more willing to waive his full no-trade clause if the fit is right with a different team, sources told Katie Woo of The Athletic.
The Cardinals don't believe they must trade the 33-year-old this winter but will present him with different options if they arise, according to Woo.
St. Louis is reportedly trying to deal third baseman Nolan Arenado and at least one of its left-handed hitters. The team traded right-hander Sonny Gray to the Boston Red Sox last Tuesday.
Contreras is still owed $36.5 million over two years with a 2028 club option worth $17.5 million. He signed a five-year, $87.5-million contract in December 2022.
The three-time All-Star hit 20 homers with 80 RBIs and a .791 OPS over 135 games in 2025.
