Toronto Blue Jays reliever Kirby Yates underwent Tommy John surgery to repair the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow on Wednesday, the team announced.
As a result, he'll miss the 2021 season.
Yates was first diagnosed with a flexor strain on Monday. It was announced within 24 hours he'd likely need Tommy John surgery for the second time in his career, but the veteran was seeking a second opinion before undergoing the procedure.
The 33-year-old joined the Blue Jays on a one-year, $5.5-million contract in January after arm injuries limited him to six games last season. The team reportedly lowered its offer to Yates after seeing his physical. Still, the Blue Jays were hopeful he'd be healthy and serve as their closer this year. Instead, he'll return to free agency next winter without pitching for them.
Yates owns a lifetime 3.54 ERA and 1.15 WHIP with 57 saves across parts of seven big-league seasons. His best year came in 2019 with the San Diego Padres, when he earned an All-Star selection while recording an NL-leading 41 saves.
