Schwarber, last season's NL MVP runner-up and league leader in homers and RBIs, is a pivotal presence in Philadelphia's lineup. Losing him would have created a significant void for manager Rob Thomson, whose contract was also extended this week.</p><p>While $30 million a season for a 32-year-old DH looks like an overpay, Schwarber's two best campaigns came in his 30s. Re-signing him gives the Phillies their best chance of winning another NL East crown and returning to the World Series for the first time since 2022. They left having turned the AL East on its head.</p><p>The reported signing of Pete Alonso to a five-year, $155-million contract injects some much-needed power into Baltimore's lineup. He also fills a critical need at first base. But the ramifications go so much deeper for the Orioles, a proud franchise in a baseball-mad town that's coming off a difficult 2025 season. By signing Alonso, Baltimore instantly regained credibility in the baseball world. He'll help the O's add another pitcher in free agency, moving them closer to returning to the top of the AL East. The two-time defending World Series champions patched up one of the few holes on their roster by reportedly adding arguably the best closer in baseball on a three-year, $69-million deal. That looks like a bargain since Edwin Díaz was apparently seeking a five-year pact worth around $100 million when the offseason started. The three-time All-Star gives the Dodgers an elite ninth-inning weapon for the first time since the departure of Kenley Jansen following the 2021 season.</p><p>It's scary to think L.A. won a pair of titles with basically a bullpen by committee in 2024 and then leaned on Roki Sasaki, who was awful as a starter in his rookie year, to close out games in the playoffs because Tanner Scott was a $72-million letdown in the regular season. Only a financial behemoth like the Dodgers can basically admit they screwed up the Scott deal by giving another closer $69 million a year later. After watching fan favorites Alonso and Díaz sign with new clubs in consecutive days during the winter meetings, it's fair to say that all of Queens is disappointed, especially after watching New York trade Brandon Nimmo for 35-year-old Marcus Semien in late November. Cohen sympathized with fans, saying he understood their reactions, but insisted, "There is lots of offseason left to put a playoff team on the field," per <a href="https://x.com/SNY_Mets/status/1998902898466734257">SNY</a>.</p><p>There is now immense pressure on the David Stearns-led front office to put together a roster capable of erasing a painful 2025 campaign that saw New York squander a 45-24 start to the season and fail to make the playoffs. Schwarber leaving Philadelphia - even for his de facto hometown team - was always a long shot. No, what stings are the reports that Schwarber was the only top-tier free agent the Reds were pursuing, almost solely because they hoped the hometown hero factor would drive ticket sales.</p><p>If that's true, ownership should be ashamed. The Reds are a talented young squad that seemed to be on the rise even before sneaking into the playoffs on the last day of the season, and they play in a very winnable division. Ownership should be taking a page out of the Orioles' playbook and pushing hard to bring in veterans who can help take this team to the next level - and this should be done without first consulting the player's birth certificate. If the Reds were ready to spend on Schwarber, then there's no excuse for them not to turn around and throw that money at another star after he says no, like Baltimore did with Alonso. This feels like a huge missed opportunity for a team with a bright future that deserves some outside investment.</p>

<p>Toronto Blue Jays manager John Schneider is excited by his team's offseason additions thus far and hinted that the reigning AL champions aren't close to being done.</p><p>"In terms of what's next ... we're still looking to add. We're still looking to add a bat," Schneider told "<a href="https://x.com/FoulTerritoryTV/status/1998882921449664984">Foul Territory</a>" on Wednesday. "We're talking with <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///mlb/players/9615" href="https://thescore.com/mlb/players/9615">Bo (Bichette)</a>. We've met with <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///wbc/players/8173" href="https://thescore.com/wbc/players/8173">(Kyle) Tucker</a>. We'd love to have Bo back."</p><p>He added, "I think that's an area we want to address to make sure we have another bat there (in the middle of the order). And then, looking for some high-leverage relief options at the back end of the 'pen."</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>The Blue Jays wasted no time shoring up their rotation this offseason, first by bringing in <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///mlb/players/8145" href="https://thescore.com/mlb/players/8145">Dylan Cease</a> on a seven-year, $210-million deal and then signing 2025 KBO MVP <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///mlb/players/8204" href="https://thescore.com/mlb/players/8204">Cody Ponce</a> on a three-year deal. They'll also have deadline acquisition <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///mlb/players/9542" href="https://thescore.com/mlb/players/9542">Shane Bieber</a> for a full season after the former Cy Young winner opted into the final year of his contract.</p><p>Toronto has been repeatedly linked to Bichette and Tucker - the top two position players available - since the offseason began. Bichette is a known commodity to the Blue Jays, having been developed in their system alongside fellow homegrown superstar <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///mlb/players/8267" href="https://thescore.com/mlb/players/8267">Vladimir Guerrero Jr.</a> Schneider called Bichette's contributions to the team "underrated and undervalued," in large part because the Blue Jays locked up Guerrero on a $500-million contract in April.</p><p>Tucker, meanwhile, reportedly visited the Blue Jays' spring training facility in Dunedin, Florida, last Wednesday. The All-Star outfielder is represented by Casey Close of Excel Sports Management.</p><p>Many of the top relievers have also been connected to the Blue Jays. The team was said to be pursuing star closer <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///mlb/players/5384" href="https://thescore.com/mlb/players/5384">Edwin Díaz</a> before he reportedly signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers. They're also chasing two-time All-Star <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///mlb/players/13691" href="https://thescore.com/mlb/players/13691">Robert Suarez</a>, <a href="https://www.sportsnet.ca/mlb/article/blue-jays-showing-little-attachment-to-world-series-roster/">Sportsnet's Ben Nicholson-Smith</a> reported Monday.</p><p>The Blue Jays have tried to reel in some of the biggest stars in free agency over the past few winters only to repeatedly come up short. This year, Schneider said, feels different. He senses that the baseball world is looking at the organization in a different light following the team's playoff run that finished inches short of a championship.</p><p>"This has been building for a few years in Toronto, in terms of ownership support, payroll, players, facilities, and it's shown on the field," Schneider said. "So, I think having the success we've had makes it a little more desirable to come here. We've definitely heard that from players and agents, and (I'm) comfortable to say that we will continue to try to get better as this month unfolds."</p>

He re-entered the market in November by opting out of the final year of that deal and is now reportedly seeking a seven-year contract. He's not tied to draft-pick compensation this winter, as he was ineligible to receive a qualifying offer after being tendered one last year.</p><p>Alonso's agent, Scott Boras, <a href="https://x.com/timbhealey/status/1988706005887365630">said in November</a> that his client is open to shifting into a primary designated hitter role with the right team.</p><p>The Red Sox have been connected to Alonso for some time, given their need for a powerful middle-of-the-order bat and question marks at first base. He'd also be a perfect fit for Fenway Park, where he'd be able to aim for the Green Monster. <p>Cooperstown welcomed one new member Sunday, as longtime second baseman Jeff Kent was elected to the Hall of Fame via the 2026 Contemporary Era Committee ballot.</p><p>Kent received 14 of 16 votes from the committee to gain election. Carlos Delgado received nine votes, while Don Mattingly and Dale Murphy each garnered six.</p><p>Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Gary Sheffield, and Fernando Valenzuela all received less than five votes. Under the new Era Committee rules that begin with this year's election, they will be ineligible to appear on a committee ballot again until 2032. If they receive less than five a second time, they'll be disqualified from further consideration.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Perhaps the most prolific slugging second baseman ever, Kent slashed .290/.356/.500 with 2,461 hits and 1,518 RBIs over 17 seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays, New York Mets, Cleveland Indians, San Francisco Giants, Houston Astros, and Los Angeles Dodgers. His 377 home runs are the most at his primary position. Among second basemen with at least 7,000 career plate appearances, only Kent and Rogers Hornsby (.577) slugged above .500.</p><p>Originally drafted by the Blue Jays in 1989, Kent debuted three years later but was traded to the Mets for David Cone - a deal that helped Toronto win the 1992 World Series - in the middle of his rookie season. While financial details of the offer aren't known, it's expected that it's worth well above $100 million, according to Rosenthal.</p><p>The news represents a stunning development for the notoriously tight-fisted Pirates. If they manage to land Schwarber, it would be the biggest free-agent deal in franchise history, easily surpassing Francisco Liriano's three-year, $39-million contract in 2015. <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///mlb/players/8245" href="https://thescore.com/mlb/players/8245">Bryan Reynolds</a>' eight-year, $106.75-million extension is the only nine-figure deal ever handed out by the Bucs.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Pittsburgh, which is coming off a 91-loss season, has consistently fielded a bottom-five payroll for most of the past decade. The very thought of trading the AL's best pitcher at the peak of his powers would be silly for any team, but especially for Detroit.</p><p>The Tigers recently emerged from a decade-long rebuild that netted the franchise a pair of first overall picks. The players they chose with those picks, Casey Mize and Spencer Torkelson, turned into solid contributors. Yet it's Skubal, an unheralded ninth-round selection out of Seattle University in 2018, who's become the homegrown face of the franchise.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Skubal's two Cy Young Awards over the last two seasons don't begin to tell the story. The 28-year-old has transformed Detroit back into a baseball town, leading the Tigers to consecutive playoff berths. The team hasn't advanced beyond the division series, but Skubal's performed brilliantly on the biggest stage, putting up a 2.04 ERA over his six postseason starts.</p><p>So why would you give up a guy like this? Even if the Tigers traded Skubal for a king's ransom that kept them in contention, the mere act of dealing him away would send a terrible message to the players left behind, the fan base, and even star manager A.J. Hinch. It would be unfathomable, and it would take the Tigers out of the running for any big-name free agents.</p><p>And it's not like the Tigers can't afford to re-sign Skubal, even though they <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3373174" href="https://thescore.com/news/3373174">reportedly</a> lowballed him last winter. Detroit routinely fielded top-five payrolls in the 2010s when the team's star-studded rosters were regularly in the postseason. Though Max Scherzer walked away, the Tigers spent big at the time to ensure that Justin Verlander and Miguel Cabrera stayed in town and even landed Prince Fielder on a nine-year deal in 2012. Owner Chris Ilitch can meet Skubal's price if he wants to.</p><p>The Tigers are a historic franchise with a track record of spending and a talented roster that plays in a very winnable division. Keeping Skubal would ensure a franchise icon stays put, help them potentially own the AL Central for the next half-decade, and send a message to other free agents that they're ready and able to spend on a winner. This is a no-brainer. But it doesn't appear that it's going to play out that way. Detroit president of baseball operations Scott Harris must have a pretty good idea of what it will take to extend Skubal, and if the Tigers' front office isn't willing to make a competitive offer, it's best to maximize the return for their ace rather than risk losing him for nothing.</p><p>Even rostering Skubal going into the season and maybe flipping him at the deadline is too risky. Not only is there a real threat of injury, but there's no way Skubal's value will be any higher than it is right now.</p><p>Skubal is arguably the heart and soul of this Tigers team. He's their best pitcher, and he's been the key cog in Detroit reaching the postseason two years in a row. Trading a player of that ilk isn't easy, and the front office would have to land a significant package in order to justify the move to the fan base - not to mention the clubhouse.</p><p>The Tigers haven't really spent big since Mike Ilitch's passing. Though they operated with their highest payroll in 2025 in eight years ($145 million), that's not close to the $200-million payrolls they carried in 2016 and 2017. Instead, the club focused on drafting and developing. Now the organization has a solid nucleus in place and a lot of payroll flexibility. The franchise could afford to drop significant money on Skubal, but the team might be better off selling high and then spreading that money around to address the numerous holes on the roster. This would, in theory, give the club a better shot at extending its current competitive window.</p><p>Detroit possesses the No. 6-ranked farm system according to MLB.com, but it's heavy on position players at the top end. Trading Skubal for a package of young and controllable pitchers makes a lot of sense. Harris could also reinvest the roughly $18 million Skubal is set to earn in arbitration this winter to sign a free-agent starter.</p><p>Skubal should have a strong market - even on an expiring deal - as teams that want to sign him next winter will also want a full season to sell him on their club.</p><p>It's not a perfect example, but the San Diego Padres were able to trade Juan Soto - in the final year of his deal - and Trent Grisham to the New York Yankees for Michael King, Drew Thorpe, Jhony Brito, Randy Vásquez, and Kyle Higashioka. The Padres then packaged Thorpe in another deal to acquire Dylan Cease from the Chicago White Sox. The Tigers have already seen that Skubal can only take them so far in the postseason, and they need more star power and depth to take the next step.</p><p>We've seen too many mid- to smaller-market teams mishandle their assets. Trading Skubal would hurt in the short term, but if the Tigers are convinced he's leaving next winter regardless, capitalizing on his trade market is a must in order to extend the club's competitive window. Just look at how the Angels mishandled Shohei Ohtani's final year of free agency and imagine how different that organization might look now if it had traded its greatest asset instead of letting him walk for a compensation draft pick. If the Tigers aren't going to pay Skubal, now is the time to pull the trigger on a trade. <em>- Wile </em></p>

<p>The Atlanta Braves acquired utility player <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///mlb/players/5676" href="https://thescore.com/mlb/players/5676">Mauricio Dubón</a> from the Houston Astros in exchange for infielder <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///mlb/players/12359" href="https://thescore.com/mlb/players/12359">Nick Allen</a>, the teams announced Wednesday.</p><p>Dubón, 31, hit .241/.289/.355 with seven homers and 33 RBIs over 398 plate appearances with the Astros in 2025. However, he's more known for his stellar glovework across the diamond, having won the AL utility Gold Glove twice in the last three seasons.</p><p>Dubón played every position except for pitcher and catcher this past season, and posted positive defensive numbers at each spot en route to picking up his second Gold Glove. He racked up the most time at second base, where he accrued five defensive runs saved and eight outs above average in 318 innings, and was also worth eight outs above average at shortstop.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>"We like the contact and the speed as well," Braves general manager Alex Anthopoulos said, according to <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6822088/2025/11/19/mauricio-dubon-trade-astros-braves-mlb/">Chandler Rome and David O'Brien of The Athletic</a>. "So, just a good piece. You know, you're gonna need that over the course of the year. We've had a bunch of injuries the last few years and the fact that he does it and he's a phenomenal teammate, just a great fit for us."</p><p>In Atlanta, Dubón could potentially slot in as the Braves' everyday shortstop, while also moving around the diamond as needed to give some of their other everyday players some rest. Defensively, he's put up 25 career DRS in 2,605 1/3 innings at shortstop, along with another four DRS at the keystone.</p><p>While not as versatile as Dubón, Allen does have some experience at both second and third base. He seems likely to take on a bigger utility role in Houston, where he could serve as a defensive replacement for either <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///mlb/players/3992" href="https://thescore.com/mlb/players/3992">Carlos Correa</a> at third or <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///mlb/players/2841" href="https://thescore.com/mlb/players/2841">Jose Altuve</a> at second, in addition to spelling both them and shortstop <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///mlb/players/12665" href="https://thescore.com/mlb/players/12665">Jeremy Peña</a>.</p><p>"I think it's a potential upside play," Astros general manager Dana Brown said of Allen, according to <a href="https://www.mlb.com/astros/news/astros-trade-for-nick-allen-deal-mauricio-dubon-to-braves">Brian McTaggart of MLB.com</a>. Iglesias' 9.8 K/9 rate was also up a full strikeout from 2024.</p><p>The Cuban has been one of the most durable bullpen arms in baseball over the last nine years, averaging nearly 61 games pitched per season since 2017 while making at least 58 appearances in every full season over that span.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>A 11-year big-league veteran, Iglesias spent most of the last four years with the Braves, who acquired him from the Los Angeles Angels at the 2022 trade deadline. He owns a lifetime 2.90 ERA and 1.05 WHIP with 869 strikeouts and 253 saves across 736 innings.</p><p>Keeping Iglesias restores some certainty in the Braves' bullpen ahead of what could be a winter of change for the group. It's also still not clear who will be his primary set-up man. Their biggest contract ever given to a free agent was a three-year, $39-million deal with Francisco Liriano in 2015, and they haven't signed any free agent to a multi-year deal since Iván Nova in 2016. However, general manager Ben Cherington <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3395456" href="https://thescore.com/news/3395456">said</a> earlier in November that the franchise has "more (payroll) flexibility" than in previous offseasons.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Pittsburgh will have to pony up a lot more than $39 million in order to lure Schwarber - arguably the top available power bat - to the Steel City. The 32-year-old was the 2025 NL MVP runner-up after posting a career-best .928 OPS with an NL-leading 56 homers and MLB-best 132 RBIs over 162 games as the Philadelphia Phillies' primary designated hitter. He could end up getting a deal that averages over $30 million per year, according to Passan.</p><p>Schwarber could be a perfect fit in the middle of the Pirates' lineup at DH and would undoubtedly enjoy aiming for PNC Park's 320-foot right-field porch while providing veteran leadership in a young clubhouse. Perhaps more importantly, though, landing him would give the perpetually floundering Bucs some newfound credibility throughout the baseball world.</p><p>Despite losing 91 games in 2025, the Pirates have perhaps the sport's best pitcher in NL Cy Young winner <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///mlb/players/17521" href="https://thescore.com/mlb/players/17521">Paul Skenes</a>, who's <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3396544" href="https://thescore.com/news/3396544">expressed</a> a desire to win in Pittsburgh. The team seems ready to try and build a contender around him before he reaches free agency in 2029. The Bucs have posted a winning record just four times since 1994 and last won a World Series in 1979.</p><p>Although their pursuit of Naylor fell short, the Pirates were open to offering him more than double what they gave Liriano a decade ago, according to Passan. Naylor ended up returning to Seattle on a five-year, $92.5-million deal.</p>

Naylor also gets a $6.5-million signing bonus, <a href="https://x.com/ByRobertMurray/status/1990570767420096821">Robert Murray of FanSided</a> reports.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>"I'm going to be a Mariner again, and I couldn't be more excited," Naylor said in a statement. His efforts helped the Mariners win their first division title since 2001.</p><p>Overall, he hit .295/.353/.462 with 20 homers, 92 RBIs, and a career-best 30 steals across 147 total games in 2025.</p><p>Naylor excelled in the playoffs, slashing .340/.392/.574 with three homers and five RBIs during the Mariners' run to the ALCS. The majority of that production came versus his hometown Toronto Blue Jays in the championship series, when Naylor went 10-for-24 during his team's seven-game series loss.</p><p>Re-signing Naylor shores up what had been a significant hole at first base for the Mariners. He also gives them another power bat behind AL MVP runner-up <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///mlb/players/10827" href="https://thescore.com/mlb/players/10827">Cal Raleigh</a>.</p><p>The Canadian is a lifetime .269/.329/.447 hitter with 104 homers and 435 RBIs across parts of seven big-league seasons with Seattle, Arizona, the Cleveland Guardians, and the San Diego Padres. Lord Grey's mug is heading back to the prairies.</p><p>The Saskatchewan Roughriders fended off a second-half comeback from the Montreal Alouettes to win the 112th Grey Cup, 25-17. It's the Green Riders' fifth championship and first since 2013.</p><p>Montreal scored 10 unanswered points in the second half to make it a one-score game and had the ball inside the Saskatchewan five-yard line with three minutes to play. But short-yardage quarterback Shea Patterson fumbled the ball back into Roughrider hands on his sneak attempt into the end zone.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>The Alouettes got one more chance with under a minute to go, but starting quarterback Davis Alexander appeared to re-injure his hamstring on a run. Alexander gutted out the last drive to afford Montreal one last chance, but his Hail Mary fell incomplete in the end zone as time expired to ensure Saskatchewan's win.</p><p><a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3400090" href="https://thescore.com/news/3400090">Grey Cup MVP</a> Trevor Harris threw for 302 yards in the win, earning his first Grey Cup ring as a starter. Running back A.J. Ouellette, a champion with Toronto in 2022, rushed for 83 yards and one touchdown on 17 carries along with a 32-yard reception. Backup QB Tommy Stevens also rushed for a pair of majors.</p><p>Saskatchewan trailed 7-1 after one quarter, but turned on the gas from there by scoring 21 straight points, including 14 in the second quarter. Ouellette's reception proved critical, as it set up his rushing TD that capped a 11-play, 87-yard drive in the second. Tommy Nield had a huge catch inside the five on the first drive of the third quarter that led to a Stevens score.</p><p>But the Alouettes did not go quietly. After a Saskatchewan field goal, Alexander led an eight-play, 70-yard scoring drive that ended in a Stevie Scott III touchdown to cut into the Roughriders' lead.</p><p>The comeback continued on the following Montreal offensive drive. Alexander had the ball at Saskatchewan's 11-yard line with nine minutes to play after Mike Rose was flagged for roughing the passer, but had to settle for a field goal. The Alouettes wouldn't score again.</p><p>Scott had one of his best games of the season on the ground for the Als, rushing for 78 yards and one touchdown on 15 carries. <p>Saskatchewan Roughriders quarterback Trevor Harris was named Grey Cup MVP after leading his team to victory over the Montreal Alouettes in the 112th Grey Cup.</p><p>Harris captained the Roughriders to victory by throwing for 302 yards and completing 23 of 27 passes for a Grey Cup-record 85.2 completion percentage, and did so without throwing an interception. While he didn't pass for a touchdown, Harris did lead drives that ended in a pair of rushing majors for short-yardage QB Tommy Stevens, and a third rushing touchdown by tailback A.J. Ouellette.</p><p>The win marked the 39-year-old pivot's first Grey Cup championship as a starting quarterback.
