Adam Jones and his agent are steadfast in their resolve to get Major League Baseball to implement stricter policies regarding unruly fans.
The Baltimore Orioles outfielder claimed he was the victim of racist insults while playing the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park on Monday, and couldn't contain his anger about the incident in a postgame interview.
"A disrespectful fan threw a bag of peanuts at me," Jones told USA Today's Bob Nightengale. "I was called the N-word a handful of times tonight ..
"It's pathetic. It's called a coward. What they need to do is that instead of kicking them out of the stadium, they need to fine them 10 grand, 20 grand, 30 grand. Something that really hurts somebody. Make them pay in full. And if they don't, take it out of their check.
"That's how you hurt somebody. You suspend them from the stadium, what does that mean? It's a slap on the wrist. That guy needs to be confronted, and he needs to pay for what he's done."
Jones and his agent Nez Balelo of CAA plan on continuing to strive for change around the league to better protect players from an incident such as Monday's from occurring once again.
"We are not going to let up on this one until we see implemented policies put in place in every city to protect these players and stop this type of reckless behavior," Balelo told Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.
"There needs to be a 'zero tolerance' rule put in place across MLB to punish people that are going to act this way. We need to set a precedent now that this will not be tolerated and if you are caught breaking this rule - throwing objects onto the field or saying demeaning racial slurs directed to a player - there will be harsh consequences to pay for this behavior.
"I have been Adam Jones' agent for the past 10 years and have lived and experienced this type of behavior with him throughout the years. It has to stop and stop now."
