Robert Lewandowski and manager Niko Kovac apparently weren't on the same page ahead of Bayern Munich's Champions League encounters with Liverpool.

After Bayern Munich failed to score a goal in two matches, the Polish star questioned Kovac's tactics by saying his defensive approach contributed to their exit from the Champions League on Wednesday.

"Of course, we knew it would be a tough game," Lewandowski told Viasport, as translated by the Independent's Jack Rathborn. "But in both games, I think we played too defensive.

"We didn’t try to push forward to create situations - in the first game and today.

"We didn’t risk much, we were playing at home it was our game but that’s why I think Liverpool beat us.

"We tried to push Liverpool but offensively sometimes it was two against four players and that’s why we didn’t do much."

The two sides produced a goalless draw in the first leg before goals from Sadio Mane, who scored twice Wednesday, and Virgil van Dijk helped Liverpool escape Munich with a 3-1 victory to secure a place in the quarterfinals of the Champions League for the second straight season.

Meanwhile, it's the earliest stage Bayern Munich has bowed out of the competition since 2011 when they were eliminated by Inter Milan in the round of 16.
