Former NHL defenseman Ryan Whitney retires

Ryan Whitney has hung 'em up.
The nine-year NHL veteran defenseman and 2010 Olympic silver medalist announced his retirement Sunday morning via Twitter.

Whitney, 32, spent last season playing in Russia with HC Sochi. He last appeared in the NHL in 2013-14, making seven appearances for the Florida Panthers.
He battled injuries throughout his North American career, being limited to 481 career games across his nine seasons.
