Cam Talbot: Acquired by Oilers for Picks

Rotowire ·

Talbot was acquired by the Oilers on Saturday from the Rangers in exchange for picks in the second, third, and seventh rounds. Along with Talbot, the Rangers shipped their seventh-round choice to Edmonton in the deal.

Analysis:

Talbot has quietly been one of the league's better backups in his two NHL seasons, compiling a 33-15-0 record, 2.00 GAA, and .931 save percentage across 57 games. As a result of those efforts, he'll earn his first crack at a No. 1 job with the Oilers in 2015-16, though the move from one of the league's better defensive units in New York to one of its worst in Edmonton will surely ding his overall numbers. Even with the Oilers adding a generational talent to their corps through the draft in top pick Connor McDavid, the defense remains a tremendous weakness, as has been the case for nearly a decade. Talbot should amount to an upgrade over Ben Scrivens in net, but he'll need the young blueliners Justin Schultz, Oscar Klefbom, and Griffin Reinhart to make major strides during the upcoming season in order to ascend to middle-tier status among fantasy goalies.
