The Carolina Hurricanes may have gotten their own version of Tyler Johnson.
General manager Ron Francis announced Monday that the Hurricanes have signed diminutive forward Derek Ryan to a one-year, two-way contract.
"Derek is a skilled, playmaking center," Francis said to the Hurricanes official site. "He’s taken a bit of an unconventional path, but has earned a chance to play professionally in North America after having success at every level in Europe. We’re excited that he chose our organization."
The deal is worth $600,000 at the NHL level or $150,000 in the AHL, with $185,000 guaranteed.
Ryan, 28, spent last season with Orebro HK in Sweden, recording 15 goals and 45 assists in 55 games, while earning MVP honors.
