Report: Justin Williams breaks off contract talks with Kings

Los Angeles Kings winger Justin Williams and his agent Thane Campbell of Pro Counsel International have broken off contract extension talks with the club, according to TSN's Pierre LeBrun.

"(Campbell told) me on Tuesday that they have shelved talks for the rest of the year - unless of course the Kings are willing to sign off on the offer they have made to the Kings," LeBrun reported on Tuesday. "They will sign if that offer is accepted.

"Until then they will shelve it until July 1st; they don't want it to be a distraction."

A three-time Stanley Cup champion and the reigning Conn Smythe Trophy winner, Williams has scored 12 goals and added 23 points in 42 games with the Kings. 

The versatile 33-year-old winger is the best puck possession player in hockey over the past five years, and is on an expiring contract that carries a $3.65 million cap hit, according to NHLNumbers.com. 

Because of Williams' reputation as a playoff performer and his demonstrated ability to slot in anywhere in the lineup, he'd be a hot commodity if he makes it to July 1.
