The Vancouver Canucks received permission to interview former Buffalo Sabres general manager Kevyn Adams for their GM opening, a source told The Athletic's Matthew Fairburn and Thomas Drance.
The Canucks needed permission to interview Adams because he was still under contract when the Sabres fired him in December.
Vancouver fired GM Patrik Allvin on Friday following a last-place finish.
Although the Sabres took off after replacing Adams with Jarmo Kekalainen, the former GM is largely responsible for assembling the roster that snapped an NHL-record 14-year playoff drought with an Atlantic Division title this season.
Adams was named Sabres GM in 2020. He acquired several of Buffalo's key players via trade, including Alex Tuch, Ryan McLeod, Josh Doan, Josh Norris, and Bowen Byram. He's also responsible for drafting Jack Quinn, Owen Power, and Zach Benson, among others. The seven-year, $50-million extension he handed Tage Thompson is among the league's most team-friendly contracts.
