The United States won its first gold medal at the IIHF World Championship since 1933, defeating Switzerland 1-0 in overtime Sunday.

Buffalo Sabres star Tage Thompson scored the golden goal in the final.

Logan Cooley and Brady Skjei recorded the assists. Jeremy Swayman stopped all 25 shots he faced for the shutout.

Swiss national team veteran Leonardo Genoni stood tall in the opposite crease, turning aside 39 of 40 shots. Genoni was named tournament MVP after setting the modern-era shutout streak. The 37-year-old finishes the tournament with a .953 save percentage and four shutouts.

Outside of the OIympics, this is the second gold medal for the United States. The Americans also won gold at the 1960 Olympics, which, at the time, doubled as the World Championship.

It's the second consecutive silver medal for Switzerland, which lost to Czechia in the final a year ago. The Swiss have never won gold.
