Jimmy Garoppolo hasn't been able to participate in OTAs because he had foot surgery in March after signing with the Las Vegas Raiders, sources told The Athletic's Vic Tafur and Tashan Reed.

The surgery addressed the left foot injury that Garoppolo suffered toward the end of last season as a member of the San Francisco 49ers. His initial prognosis didn't involve surgery and left open the possibility of the signal-caller returning for the end of the 49ers' postseason run. However, the Raiders reportedly determined he needed to go under the knife during a physical earlier this offseason.

Head coach Josh McDaniels did not confirm the procedure but spoke in an optimistic tone Thursday about Garoppolo's absence from offseason workouts.

"We don't play a game for 100 days," McDaniels said. "Everything that's happened since we signed Jimmy, we knew ahead of time."

Garoppolo inked a three-year, $72.75-million contract with Las Vegas in free agency this offseason. The 31-year-old replaces longtime starter Derek Carr, who was released after nine seasons.

Veteran Brian Hoyer and fourth-round rookie Aidan O'Connell are behind Garoppolo on the quarterback depth chart.
