Mahomes: Herbert makes 'special' throws no other QB can
Patrick Mahomes often makes the seemingly impossible happen on a football field, but the Kansas City Chiefs star believes Justin Herbert's talent stands alone amongst quarterbacks.
"He throws some passes that I don't think anyone can throw in this league, and that includes myself," Mahomes said Wednesday ahead of a Sunday night matchup with the Los Angeles Chargers, according to Pro Football Talk's Myles Simmons.
"He has a cannon for an arm, you watch - I watch on film every week because we play similar opponents - there's some throws that you just kind of shake your head because they are just that special."
Widely tipped to be an MVP candidate in 2022, Herbert has produced an up-and-down campaign amid a host of injuries to the Chargers' offense.
After throwing six touchdowns to just one interception in his first two games, the 24-year-old has been limited to only seven passing scores while tossing four interceptions over his last six appearances. He's thrown a pick in each of his previous four games.
But Herbert could find his form down the stretch as the 5-4 Chargers target a playoff berth, with star wide receivers Keenan Allen and Mike Williams seemingly nearing their return.
Mahomes, meanwhile, remains one of the favorites to win the MVP award for a second time. The Chiefs standout leads the NFL with 2,936 passing yards and 25 passing touchdowns. He's also second in QBR and fourth in passer rating.
Herbert produced the most passing yards (9,350) through the first two seasons of a career in NFL history. He also set franchise single-season records for passing touchdowns (38) and yards (5,014) in 2021.
