Saints GM 'not afraid to pull that trigger' on a QB

New Orleans Saints general manager Mickey Loomis won't hesitate to draft Drew Brees' eventual successor this week.

"I think that any time you have a chance to get a quality quarterback prospect, regardless of your quarterback situation, you'd like to take advantage of that," Loomis told John DeShazier of the team's website on Wednesday. "For us, it hasn't come. There hasn't been the match where we're picking with a prospect that we really like. Our approach is exactly the same this year: If there's someone there that we really like and have a vision for at the time we're picking, then we're not afraid to pull that trigger."

The Saints have only drafted two quarterbacks since Brees arrived in New Orleans in 2006: Garrett Grayson in Round 3 of 2015, and Sean Canfield in Round 7 of 2010.

However, Brees is now 41 years old. He signed a two-year deal this offseason, and it wouldn't surprise anyone if he retired after it expires following the 2021 campaign. Brees is reportedly set to sign with NBC once his playing career is over to be groomed as Cris Collinsworth's replacement as the Sunday Night Football color analyst.

It's unclear how early Loomis is willing to select a signal-caller, but the Saints were reportedly among several teams to do homework on Utah State quarterback Jordan Love. The big-armed passer is a bit of a wild card and may go as high as the middle of the first round, but could also wind up as a Day 2 selection.

The Saints own the 24th pick on Thursday night.
