Mahomes: 'I didn't understand how to read defenses' until mid-2018

Patrick Mahomes has won an MVP Award and Super Bowl title after just two seasons as a starter, and the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback didn't fully grasp the details of his job until recently.
In an upcoming episode of HBO's "The Shop," Mahomes revealed he didn't completely learn how to read defenses until midway through the 2018 season.
"I didn't I understand how to read defenses until like halfway through last year," Mahomes said in a teaser for the show's March 7 episode. "I understood coverages but, how to be able to pick up little tendencies that defenses do, stuff that (Tom) Brady and them have done, they know and they just do it, I was just playing."
There you have it, NFL. The MVP of Super Bowl LIV was "just playing" up until the midpoint of his league MVP season. Opposing defenses have been warned.
