The Kansas City Chiefs have signed running back Damien Williams to a contract extension, his agent announced Thursday.

The contract is a two-year deal worth a maximum value of $8.1 million, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Williams has led the Chiefs' backfield in recent weeks following Kareem Hunt's release and Spencer Ware's hamstring injury. He's averaged 5.3 yards per carry in 2018 while eclipsing 100 total yards in each of his last two games.

The former member of the Miami Dolphins was scheduled hit free agency this spring, but his new contract could put him in position to secure a roster spot in 2019.

Williams will continue to operate in a running back committee with Ware as the Chiefs look to lock up the AFC's No. 1 seed on Sunday versus the Oakland Raiders.
