Texas Tech relieved head coach Matt Wells of his duties, the school announced Monday.

Wells, 48, coached the Red Raiders to a 13-17 record in two-plus campaigns.

Athletic director Kirby Hocutt named offensive coordinator Sonny Cumbie interim coach.

The bench boss' departure comes two days after Texas Tech suffered a 25-24 loss at the hands of Kansas State.

Wells served as Utah State's coach before accepting the same position in Lubbock, Texas. He led the Aggies to five bowl appearances.

The South Carolina native replaced current Arizona Cardinals coach Kliff Kingsbury, whom the school fired after six seasons following the 2018 campaign.

The Red Raiders have struggled to put together a winning record of late. The program has not finished above .500 since 2015 under Kingsbury.

Texas Tech (5-3) will square off against No. 4 Oklahoma on Saturday.
