Spurs set NBA record with 38th straight home win to start season

The San Antonio Spurs remain indestructible in the familiar confines of AT&T Center.

The Spurs dispatched the New Orleans Pelicans' skeleton crew 100-92 Wednesday night, to improve to 38-0 at home in 2015-16. With that, they surpassed the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls for the longest home winning streak to start a season in NBA history.

Those Bulls, who would also famously set the still-standing regular-season record of 72 wins, started 37-0 at home before suffering a one-point loss at the hands of the Charlotte Hornets. That loss also snapped a cumulative streak of 44 straight regular-season home wins, carried over from the previous season.

That record had also stood until this year, when it was eclipsed by both the Spurs and Golden State Warriors. Both team's streaks are still active, with the Warriors up to 54 straight, and the Spurs extending theirs to 46 with the win over the Pelicans.

Head coach Gregg Popovich was characteristically enthused about the record-setting win. Asked what his team's 38-0 home record is worth, Pop responded: "Maybe a cup of coffee. Maybe."

The Spurs have three remaining games at AT&T separating them from a perfect season at home. Their three opponents have a combined record of 169-54. So, yeah, they'll have to earn it.
