Goran Dragic on signing long-term with Heat: 'That's my wish'
In surrendering a pair of first-round picks to acquire Goran Dragic from the Phoenix Suns at the trade deadline, the Miami Heat couldn't have made it more clear they hope to retain the unrestricted free agent this offseason.
For his part, Dragic went as far as he has yet this season in giving any indication which may he may lean after opting out of his 2015-16 player option in late June. While he hasn't ruled out signing with the Los Angeles Lakers, and he's said his free agency will be an open one, Dragic said Friday he hopes to stay in Miami, according to Jason Lieser of the Palm Beach Post.
"That's my wish," he said. "Right now I'm focused on doing as much as possible this season and make the playoffs, but of course this first 10-15 days here has been a great feeling for me. Unbelievable."
Miami was among the few teams Dragic was willing to move to at the deadline, in essence telling the others he wouldn't re-up if dealt. How the remainder of the season goes could factor into his decision, as will the fact the Heat can offer an extra year and more money than any other team.
The relationship is off to a decent start on the court, with Dragic averaged 15.9 points and 4.9 assists in seven games. The Heat have gone 4-3 in those games and have a one-game hold on a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, something they'll need Dragic to play well to hang on to without Chris Bosh the rest of the way.
