The Dallas Mavericks are considering Jeff Van Gundy and Jeff Hornacek as potential additions to Jason Kidd's coaching staff, reports basketball insider Marc Stein, courtesy of The Dallas Morning News.

Van Gundy has worked as a commentator for ESPN since 2007, after he was fired following a four-season stint as head coach of the Houston Rockets. He went 182-146 during the regular season and made three trips to the postseason in Houston.

Before his time with the Rockets, he was head coach of the New York Knicks for seven seasons, highlighted by a run to the NBA Finals in the lockout-shortened 1998-99 campaign when New York fell to the San Antonio Spurs. He spent seven seasons as a Knicks assistant to open his NBA coaching career, beginning in 1989-90 alongside then-head coach Stu Jackson.

Despite his lengthy spell away from the bench, Van Gundy has frequently emerged as a reported candidate in multiple head coaching openings in recent seasons. He's the younger brother of TNT commentator and fellow former NBA bench boss Stan Van Gundy.

Hornacek, previously the head coach of the Knicks and Phoenix Suns, has been an assistant with the Rockets for the past three seasons. For the first three years of his coaching career, he was an assistant to Jerry Sloan and, later, Tyrone Corbin on the Utah Jazz, where he also spent the final six-and-a-half campaigns of his 14-year playing career.
