<p>South Carolina head coach Dawn Staley confirmed she interviewed with the New York Knicks this summer when the NBA franchise was still searching for a replacement for Tom Thibodeau.</p><p>Though the Knicks eventually decided on Mike Brown as their next head coach, Staley, who felt she did "pretty well" in her interview, said she would've accepted the position.</p><p>"If the Knicks would've offered me the job, I would have had to do it," Staley told Candace Parker and Aliyah Boston on an episode of the "<a href="https://youtu.be/AJqXztzi7nE?t=2899">Post Moves</a>" podcast Wednesday. "Not just for me. It's for women. Just to break open that (door).</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>"I would have had to. It's the New York Knicks. And I'm from Philly. But it's the freaking New York Knicks. And I said that in the interview."</p><p>Staley said she questioned the organization during her interview on whether it was fully prepared for the possible fallout of hiring a woman for the role. However, she believes those queries may have caused the Knicks to second-guess potentially appointing the Hall of Famer.</p><p>"You're going to be asked questions that you don't have to be asked if you hire a male coach," the 55-year-old added. "There's going to be the media, there's going to be all this stuff that you're going to have to deal with that you didn't have to deal with and don't have to deal with when you hire a male. And then that really got them to thinking, 'Shit, maybe she's right.' And then I felt the energy change after that.</p><p>"So I shot myself in the foot by being a leader, being inquisitive, and asking all those darn questions."</p><p>Staley first joined the Gamecocks in 2008 and has led South Carolina to three national titles since 2017. The two-time Associated Press Coach of the Year has taken the program to five straight Final Fours in March Madness and has also won nine SEC Tournaments at the helm.</p><p>Becky Hammon is the only woman to serve as acting head coach during an NBA game. Hammon was elevated from San Antonio Spurs assistant during a Dec. 30, 2020 game in which Gregg Popovich was ejected.</p><p>A year later, Hammon left the Spurs to take charge of the Las Vegas Aces - her first full-time head coaching job in any league. She won back-to-back WNBA titles in her first two seasons.</p>

Click <a href="https://www.fiba.basketball/en/events/fiba-eurobasket-2025/games">here</a> to view the schedule and results.</em></p><p>The NBA season won't tip off for another two months, but if you're itching to watch some of the league's top stars play competitive hoops, you're in luck.</p><p>The 2025 men's FIBA EuroBasket tournament starts Wednesday at 6:30 a.m. ET when Lithuania takes on Great Britain. The first day will feature a host of familiar NBA names across six games, including the last matchup when powerhouse Serbia faces Estonia.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Here's everything you need to know about this year's European competition.</p><h3>What is EuroBasket?</h3><p>EuroBasket is Europe's premier international basketball tournament. Like its soccer equivalent, the UEFA European Championships, EuroBasket is held every four years, although the 2021 event was pushed to 2022 because of the pandemic. It's traditionally played between August and September, when the NBA and most European domestic leagues are still in their offseasons.</p><p>The tournament's been made up of 24 teams since 2011, when it increased from 16. The Soviet Union/Russia has won the tournament a record 15 times, thanks to a run of eight straight gold medals during the '50s and '60s; however, FIBA indefinitely banned Russia from all competitions in 2022 following its invasion of Ukraine. Defending champion Spain has won four of the last six tournaments, giving La Roja the most gold medals of any current nation.</p><h3>How to watch</h3><p>EuroBasket will be streamed exclusively on <a href="https://www.courtside1891.basketball/">Courtside 1891</a> in the United States and Canada.</p><h3>Where and when</h3><p>This year's EuroBasket runs from Aug. 27 through the final on Sept. 14. For the fourth straight edition, four countries will share hosting duties for the opening group stage:</p><ul>
<li>Limassol, Cyprus</li>
<li>Tampere, Finland</li>
<li>Katowice, Poland</li>
<li>Riga, Latvia</li>
</ul><p>Latvia will take over as the tournament's sole host from the knockout stage through the final.</p><h3>Format</h3><p>Four groups of six teams each will compete in the opening round, with the top four in each group moving on to the round of 16. In the group stage, teams receive two points for a win, one for a loss, and zero for a forfeit (there are no ties).</p><p>If multiple countries finish with the same number of points, head-to-head results are used as the first tiebreaker. Of his 822 career regular-season games, he played 484 with Colorado, registering 307 points for the Avs.</p><p>One of the league's top offensive-minded blue-liners in his prime, he led Avalanche defensemen in scoring in six separate seasons, including back-to-back 14-goal campaigns in 2017-18 and 2018-19.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Barrie also made stops with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Edmonton Oilers, Nashville Predators, and, most recently, the Calgary Flames. He played 13 games with the latter last season while also splitting time with their AHL affiliate.</p><p>The Victoria, British Columbia, native appeared in 47 career playoff contests, the bulk of them with the Avalanche (21) and Oilers (20).</p>

<p>Free-agent wing Malik Beasley is no longer a target in a federal investigation into suspicious betting activity related to his prop bets, his lawyers told <a href="https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/46047941/attorneys-malik-beasley-no-longer-target-gambling-probe">ESPN's Shams Charania</a> Friday.</p><p>"Months after this investigation commenced, Malik remains uncharged and is not the target of this investigation," attorney Steve Haney said. "An allegation with no charge, indictment, or conviction should never have the catastrophic consequence this has caused Malik. This has literally been the opposite of the presumption of innocence."</p><p>The investigation by the Eastern District of New York centered on the 2023-24 season when Beasley was with the Milwaukee Bucks, according to Charania.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>At least one major U.S. sportsbook reportedly flagged unusual betting activity on Beasley's prop at the start of January.</p><p>A gambling industry source pointed ESPN to a Jan. 31 game between the Bucks and the Portland Trail Blazers, when the odds on Beasley posting fewer than 2.5 rebounds shortened from approximately +120 to -250 ahead of the contest due to a surge in wagers on the under. Beasley finished with six rebounds.</p><p>Beasley was reportedly on the verge of signing a three-year, $42-million contract to return to the Detroit Pistons at the start of free agency, but the deal fell apart after news of the federal investigation surfaced. The Pistons have since added <a href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/24860">Caris LeVert</a>, <a href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/45013">Duncan Robinson</a>, and <a href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/12759">Javonte Green</a>, and the club can now only sign Beasley to a maximum $7.2-million deal for next season. Three years later, he became the team's sole owner after purchasing all outstanding shares. Carolina has made the postseason in all seven full seasons since his initial purchase, including three trips to the Eastern Conference Final. The Hurricanes' 2019 appearance snapped a 10-year playoff drought.</p><p>Allen co-founded tech giant Microsoft with Bill Gates in 1975 and purchased the NBA franchise in 1988 for $70 million. Led by his sister, Jody Allen, his estate assumed control of the franchise following his death in October 2018.</p><p>The Blazers announced in May that proceeds from the team's eventual sale would go toward philanthropy as per a directive from Paul Allen.</p>

The 26-year-old averaged 14 points and shot 52.6% from distance as Indiana mounted a five-game winning streak without its franchise star.</p><p>Colson played in 30 contests with the Fever this season, making six starts in her first year with the franchise. The 36-year-old spent the previous three campaigns with the Las Vegas Aces and was part of the group that won back-to-back titles in 2022 and 2023.</p>

<p>The New York Knicks are signing forward <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/37879" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/37879">Mikal Bridges</a> to a four-year extension worth $150 million, his agents told <a href="https://x.com/ShamsCharania/status/1951036775868080529">ESPN's Shams Charania</a>.</p><p>The new deal, which includes a trade kicker, prevents Bridges from becoming an unrestricted free agent next summer. However, it will allow him to test free agency as soon as 2029, when he'll decide on a player option for the extension's final season.</p><p>Bridges, 28, averaged 17.6 points, 3.7 assists, and 3.2 rebounds in his first year in New York while starting every game for a fifth straight season. At 37 minutes per contest, he was second on the Knicks only to fellow Villanova alum <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/30695" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/30695">Josh Hart</a> (37.6) for the most average minutes. He led the entire NBA in total game time last season, however, playing 3,036 minutes to Hart's second-ranked 2,897.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>The maximum extension Bridges could have signed would have been worth $156 million, according to <a href="https://x.com/IanBegley/status/1951038362200187065">SNY's Ian Begley</a>, who notes that the minor discount gives New York some financial flexibility to flesh out the rest of its roster. The former 10th overall pick also could have negotiated for a fifth year from the Knicks - and likely more guaranteed money - if he let his contract expire and re-signed with the franchise next summer, per <a href="https://x.com/IanBegley/status/1951039378119115221">Begley</a>.</p><p>The Knicks surrendered significant draft capital to acquire Bridges from their crosstown rivals, the Brooklyn Nets, in July 2024. In addition to trading Bojan Bogdanovic, <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/45077" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/45077">Shake Milton</a>, and Mamadi Diakite, the Knicks parted with five first-round picks, the right to swap another first-rounder, and a future second-round selection to pry Bridges away.</p><p>Though his scoring dipped slightly from the 21.2 points per game he scored with the Nets, Bridges became one of the Knicks' most impactful members of now-dismissed head coach Tom Thibodeau's rotation. New York posted its only negative net rating (minus-0.5) throughout the regular season during Bridges' off-court minutes. Meanwhile, the Knicks outscored opponents by 5.6 points per 100 possessions with Bridges on the court, the fifth-best mark on the team.</p><p>The Knicks now have four members of their starting core locked down through at least 2027-28: Bridges, Hart, <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/45223" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/45223">Jalen Brunson</a>, and <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/46480" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/46480">OG Anunoby</a>. Brunson and Anunoby each have player options for 2028-29, while New York controls a $22.4-million team option for Hart in 2027-28. Five-time All-Star center <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/37817" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/37817">Karl-Anthony Towns</a> is guaranteed under contract through 2026-27, though his deal features a $61-million player option for 2027-28 - his age-32 season.</p>

<p>Houston Astros third baseman Isaac Paredes is expected to miss at least two months with a right hamstring injury, a source told <a href="https://x.com/AriA1exander/status/1950688193654985128">Ari Alexander of KPRC2</a>.</p><p>Paredes will reportedly seek a second opinion in hopes of avoiding surgery.</p><p>After getting that news, the Astros acquired former Gold Glove-winning third baseman <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///mlb/players/10610" href="https://thescore.com/mlb/players/10610">Ramón Urías</a> and cash from the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for right-handed pitching prospect Twine Palmer.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>The 26-year-old Paredes has missed the last 10 games after Houston placed him on the injury list on July 20. Paredes suffered the injury while running to first base on a deep hit off the left-field wall against the Seattle Mariners.</p><p>Astros manager Joe Espada described Paredes' injury as "pretty significant" and suggested the All-Star would be sidelined for an extended period. Paredes also missed three contests in June due to a hamstring issue in his left leg.</p><p>He's slashing .259/.359/.470 (.829 OPS) in 409 appearances this season while leading the Astros in home runs with 19.</p><p>Urías has spent his entire career with the Orioles. The 31-year-old is having a down season at the plate, hitting .248/.300/.388 with eight home runs and 34 RBIs over 77 games. However, he's shown some power at times, hitting a career-high 16 homers in 2022.</p><p>His value is primarily on the defensive side of the ball. Urías, who won a Gold Glove in 2022, has tallied six defensive runs saved and three outs above average at the hot corner this season.</p><p>Palmer was Houston's 19th-round draft pick in 2024. The 20-year-old owns a 2.62 ERA and 1.25 WHIP with 48 strikeouts and 27 walks across 15 professional outings.</p>

<p>New York Liberty star forward Breanna Stewart has been diagnosed with a bone bruise in her right knee, head coach Sandy Brondello said Wednesday, according to <a href="https://www.espn.com/wnba/story/_/id/45863679/liberty-stewart-bone-bruise-knee-no-return-line">ESPN's Michael Voelpel</a>.</p><p>The Liberty don't have a return timeline for Stewart.</p><p>The two-time MVP hurt her knee just minutes into the first quarter of New York's loss to the Los Angeles Sparks on Saturday. Stewart didn't play Monday in the Liberty's 92-82 loss to the Dallas Wings.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>"We want to be smart with it," Brondello said ahead of Wednesday's WNBA Finals rematch against the Minnesota Lynx. Aracena, 20, is the 19th-ranked prospect in the Mets' system.</p><p>Soto, a two-time All-Star, posted a 3.74 ERA in 45 appearances (36 1/3 innings) with the Orioles this year. He's slated to hit free agency this offseason.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>The southpaw addresses a glaring need in the Mets' bullpen.
