What if Shohei Ohtani had become a Tampa Bay Ray?
The Los Angeles Angels and Rays seriously discussed a mammoth trade that would've sent Ohtani to Tampa Bay prior to the 2023 trade deadline, sources told The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal.
As part of the deal, Los Angeles reportedly would've received third baseman Junior Caminero and shortstop Carson Williams, two of Tampa Bay's top prospects at the time. The Rays were also willing to include other pieces to finalize a deal, according to Rosenthal.
Ohtani potentially would've served as a rental for the Rays, as he was nearing the end of his contract. It was the second straight year in which he generated strong interest around the league. Although Los Angeles and Tampa Bay reportedly engaged in trade talks about the two-way superstar, Angels owner Arte Moreno ultimately decided not to move him. Ohtani signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers as a free agent months later.
Ohtani, 31, has built an even more impressive resume since leaving the Angels, claiming two NL MVP awards and winning two World Series in as many seasons with the Dodgers.
Meanwhile, Caminero has established himself as one of the sport's best third basemen. The 22-year-old hit 45 home runs and earned his first All-Star selection in 2025.
