Athletics' Bassitt hospitalized after being hit in head by comebacker

Oakland Athletics right-hander Chris Bassitt was carted off the field and taken to hospital after being hit on the right side of his head by a comebacker off Chicago White Sox outfielder Brian Goodwin's bat Tuesday.

Bassitt dropped to the mound after being struck and started bleeding. Trainers eventually helped him up and onto the cart.

"Chris Bassitt is conscious and aware and is on his way to the hospital. We will provide additional information when possible," the club announced shortly after the incident, according to Jessica Kleinschmidt of NBC Sports.

A's manager Bob Melvin stated postgame that Bassitt required stitches and that further tests will be done to determine whether he suffered any fractures. The team doesn't believe Bassitt's eye was hit.

Burch Smith entered the game in relief, taking over with the bases loaded in the second inning with nobody out. Smith allowed five runs to score, with Bassitt being charged with three of them.

Bassitt, 32, has been integral to the Athletics' success this year, authoring a 3.06 ERA and 3.36 FIP over 24 starts entering Tuesday.
