Watch: Yankees fans throw baseballs at Rays players, halting game

Yankee Stadium resembled the Bronx Zoo on Friday night.

New York Yankees fans began throwing baseballs onto the field in the eighth inning, briefly halting play between the Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays. The projectiles came close to hitting several of Tampa Bay's outfielders.

Although the Rays began moving towards the dugout, umpires did not call them off the field, and the game eventually continued following an estimated two-minute delay. Tampa Bay went on to win the contest, 8-2.

"Kind of hate seeing that," Yankees manager Aaron Boone said, according to SNY. "... Unfortunately, a handful of people end up doing it, and it looks bad for everyone. So it's unfortunate that that happened."

The Yankees and Rays had a dust-up last year, and tension has again been brewing between the AL East rivals in 2021. Earlier this week, Tampa Bay outfielder Kevin Kiermaier said his team was "frustrated" with New York after multiple Rays players were hit by pitches during their recent series at Tropicana Field.
