New York Yankees left-hander Zack Britton will undergo surgery to remove a bone chip from his left elbow, the team announced Tuesday.
New York will shut down Britton for about six weeks, Andy Martino of SNY reports, adding that the recovery time for this type of procedure is roughly three-to-four months.
"I appreciate the support from everyone," Britton wrote on Twitter. "We all have daily challenges we have to overcome in order to reach our goals. Just have to keep pushing ahead! I will get this taken care of during the upcoming week and be back as soon as I can."
The 33-year-old underwent an MRI on Monday after experiencing elbow soreness.
Britton threw during a bullpen session on Saturday and felt discomfort for two days afterward, Yankees manager Aaron Boone said.
The two-time All-Star has been an important member of New York's bullpen since the club acquired him in a 2018 trade with the Baltimore Orioles. Britton owns a 2.14 ERA and 1.12 WHIP with 14 saves in 105 1/3 innings with the Yankees.
