Retired Major League Baseball infielder Tony Fernandez remains in critical condition after undergoing surgery to treat an infection, according to his former teammate Jesse Barfield on Twitter, who shared an update from ex-pitcher Juan Guzman.

The 57-year-old Dominican's complications apparently stemmed from issues with his kidney, according to Hector Gomez of Deportivo Z 101, who tweeted Saturday that Fernandez had experienced a subtle improvement in his health.
Fernandez revealed in 2017 that he suffers from polycystic kidney disease.
In 17 big-league seasons, Fernandez was a five-time All-Star and four-time Gold Glove winner.
Twelve of his professional seasons came with the Toronto Blue Jays, who signed him as an undrafted free agent in 1979. He went on to become the franchise leader in games played, hits, and triples.
He's one of 11 people honored by the Blue Jays in their Level of Excellence, being recognized for the individual achievements of his career on Sept. 23, 2001.
