Cardinals score 5 runs after famous 'Rally Squirrel' reappears

This might have been the break the St. Louis Cardinals needed.

While the Cardinals and Detroit Tigers were deadlocked at 0-0 in the seventh inning on Sunday, a squirrel interrupted the contest by running onto the diamond at Comerica Park.

The game was delayed for over a minute as the scared rodent ran around the infield before finally exiting.

Ordinarily, a brief squirrel delay would result in a couple of laughs before the game resumes. But the Cardinals have a history with this animal.

Back in 2011, a squirrel delayed Games 3 and 4 of the NLDS at Busch Stadium, and the Cardinals rallied after both delays. Not only would the Cardinals ride that "Rally Squirrel" momentum to their most recent World Series championship, but the squirrel itself became something of a celebrity in St. Louis along the way - to the point that its likeness was engraved on the team's 2011 championship rings.

The magic from the original "Rally Squirrel" has apparently not been lost. Immediately following Sunday's squirrel delay, the Cardinals' offense exploded for a five-run seventh inning that spurred them to a 5-2 win over the Tigers.

The Cardinals are in a playoff race, but had hit a snag this weekend, losing to Detroit in walk-off fashion on both Friday and Saturday. If 2011 was any indication, Sunday's reappearance of the "Rally Squirrel" could end up being a late-season turning point.
