Former MLB infielder Andy Marte died in a car accident in his native Dominican Republic early Sunday morning, his agency J.M.G. Baseball confirmed.

He was 33.

According to Baseball America's Vince Lara-Cinisomo, reports out of the Dominican state Marte's white Mercedes was traveling at a "high speed" prior to the incident.

The Arizona Diamondbacks, Marte's last MLB club, sent condolences Sunday to his family. So too did the Cleveland Indians, where he spent the majority of his major-league career.

Once rated one of the sport's top prospects, Marte made his MLB debut with the Atlanta Braves in 2005 and appeared in 24 games. The following offseason he was traded twice, winding up on the Indians by way of the Boston Red Sox.

He spent five seasons with Cleveland before electing for free agency and agreeing on a number of minor-league deals until 2014, when he appeared in six big-league games for the Diamondbacks.

Marte was playing with Las Aguilas Cibaenas in the Dominican League playoffs this winter.
