With a leadoff single against the San Diego Padres on Wednesday, Miami Marlins outfielder Ichiro Suzuki now has 4,256 hits between MLB and Nippon Professional Baseball, tying Pete Rose's all-time hits record.
The infield single marks Ichiro's 2,978th hit in the majors. He had 1,278 hits in Japan.
Rose has continued to say Ichiro isn't the true hit king because he didn't get all his hits in the same league. Major League Baseball doesn't recognize combined statistics, so Rose's record isn't in any jeopardy.
The only other player to amass more than 4,000 hits is Hall of Famer Ty Cobb, who collected 4,189 hits over 24 major-league seasons.
Ichiro's first-inning single did inch him closer to another milestone, though. The 10-time All-Star is now 22 hits shy of 3,000 hits in the majors.
