Another Canadian Open win would be a heckuva three-peat for Rory McIlroy. With Canada's national PGA event descending on Oakdale Golf & Country Club for the first time, McIlroy is looking to go back-to-back-to-back on three different courses over five seasons.

McIlroy comes in as the heavy favorite at +500, having won in Hamilton in 2019 and at St. George's last year. (The Canadian Open wasn't played in 2020 and 2021.) The field also isn't as strong at the top, with next week's U.S. Open being played in Los Angeles. Those factors make it prohibitive to back McIlroy, especially after he's handed strokes back to the field on wedge shots and on the greens recently.

Three draws (odds to win/top 20)

Golfers more valuable than their odds suggest this week

Shane Lowry (+2000/-110)

Of course, there are no course history metrics for Oakdale for the TOUR's stars. However, just a stone's throw away from St. George's, this year's host site has a very similar setup. Shane Lowry was third in strokes gained: tee to green last year, but his struggles on the green pushed him back to T10, backing up a T2 and T12 in 2019 and 2018, respectively. He's clearly comfortable with the event north of the border, but he's also coming off a quiet top 20 at the PGA Championship at Oak Hill, another classic-style course. At -110 for a top-20 result, Lowry is better than a 50/50 shot to finish high up the leaderboard.

Ludvig Aberg (+6600/+200)

Beyond being a potential tune-up for the U.S. Open, the Canadian Open comes at an interesting time on the golf calendar. With NCAA golf ending last week, a new crop of stellar talents hits pro golf. We saw it with Rose Zhang becoming a household name overnight in the LPGA.

Ludvig Aberg was the world's No. 1 amateur golfer - having won back-to-back Ben Hogan Awards - and he earned PGA TOUR membership by finishing atop the PGA University rankings this past season. This isn't just a tune-up for Aberg, who might be one of the 10 most talented players in the field. Asking for a Zhang-like win might be too much, but a top-20 result at 2-to-1 odds is worth a bet, especially since he finished T24 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

Sam Bennett (+20000/+650)

After getting bailed out last week by a long-shot top-20 bet thanks to Adam Schenk (+450), why not take another flier on a college competitor of Aberg's? Sam Bennett had his own moment at the Masters this season when he was in contention until the final round, but that was no fluke.

The SEC Player of the Year (over eventual national champion Fred Biondi), Bennett reached the Masters after winning the U.S. Amateur title in 2022. Bennett made his pro debut last week and was even-par through 61 holes before things got away from him on the tough setup at Muirfield Village. At +650, that's well worth a swing on Bennett playing well this weekend.

The scary fade

A golfer with high expectations who's worth betting to miss the cut at a big price

Harry Hall (+170 to miss the cut)

This may not be as scary as fading a defending champion like Billy Horschel last week, but plus-money is plus-money, and that's what we're getting with Harry Hall. While Hall scored a T3 at the Charles Schwab Classic, Colonial is a far different track from Oakdale, and his putting helped him gain almost seven strokes on the field in Rounds 1 and 2. He was over par the rest of the weekend. Hall's next-best result in a main TOUR event was a T-83, and he's recorded a trio of missed cuts since the beginning of March.

The favorite club in the bag

We've picked two golfers to win each week: Max Homa and Tom Kim. Assuming they play 20-to-25 events, we're expecting our second-tier oddsboard duo will be profitable. It took one week for that approach to pay dividends: Homa won at Torrey Pines at 20-1 and almost added a second win at Riviera.

Are Max and Tom playing this week?

Nope. Both are resting before the U.S. Open, with Homa being a popular pick looking ahead to next week at LACC.

Emiliano Grillo overcame a costly error and defeated Adam Schenk in a playoff to prevail at the Charles Schwab Challenge on Sunday.

The Argentinian birdied the second playoff hole to claim his first PGA TOUR title since October 2015 when he won the Frys.com Open in a playoff over Kevin Na. That was Grillo's eighth career PGA Tour event but first as a member.

Grillo led at Colonial by two strokes Sunday but fell apart on the 18th hole. His tee shot found the stream and rolled for several minutes before coming to a stop.

Grillo double-bogeyed and sat at 8-under entering the playoff. Schenk finished with the same score after firing a 2-over 72 before the extra holes.

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — PGA Tour rookie Harry Hall intended to slip on his Vegas Golden Knights jersey while playing Colonial's par-3 13th hole Saturday. That plan changed after falling out of the lead because of consecutive double bogeys.

It was only after finishing the third round back in a share of the lead, with Adam Schenk at 10-under 200, that the Englishman who lives in Las Vegas after playing at UNLV pulled on the jersey. His favorite NHL team was playing the local Dallas Stars in the Western Conference Final.

“Being 3 over going into the (13th) hole, I didn’t think that would be the best thing to do,” said Hall, who was the solo leader after the first and second rounds. "Yeah, I’m T1 after the round, so I thought I’d wear it in the interviews.”

Hall's final putt in a round of 2-over 72 was a 10-foot par at No. 18 after he chipped from the fringe out of an awkward stance that had his heels hanging over the lip of a bunker. That followed a 10-foot birdie at the 383-yard 17th.

Schenk, also looking for his first win but in his 171st PGA Tour event, closed out a 67 with a 16-foot birdie putt.

“It was a lot of luck making that putt. It was a foot and a half of break and extremely fast,” he said.

The 31-year-old Indiana native was the runner-up at the Valspar Championship in mid-March, but has since missed four cuts and tied for 31st at the RBC Heritage. He hit 11 of 14 fairways and 15 of 18 greens while recording only one bogey Saturday.

“We just did a really good job managing everything today. It was one of those days where right where we were looking was right where I actually hit it,” Scheck said. “It doesn’t happen very often, but it’s nice when it does.”

Harris English, who shot a 70 in the final group with Hall, was a stroke back at 9-under 201 after his bogey on 18, when an 8-foot par chance curled just by the cup. That was two holes after he had sole possession of the lead with a 40-foot birdie on the par-3 16th.

Scottie Scheffler, the No. 1 player in the world and the Colonial runner-up last year, bogeyed three of his last five holes for a 72 after opening with consecutive 67s. He was among six players tied for 10th place at 4 under.

Defending champion Sam Burns, who overcame a seven-stroke deficit in the final round last year and beat Scheffler on the first playoff hole, had his second consecutive 70. He is tied for 16th at 3 under, again seven strokes off the lead after three rounds.

The only player to win in back-to-back years was Ben Hogan, who did it twice — 1946 and 1947, the event’s first two years, and again in 1952-53.

It is the first time since 2014 that it is a shared lead going into the final round at Colonial. There was a four-way tie after 54 holes that year, though eventual winner Adam Scott wasn't part of that quartet.

Hall’s double-bogeys came at Nos. 6 and 7, after 14 birdies and only two bogeys in his 41 holes before that.

After his tee shot at the 401-yard sixth hole went into the right rough, Hall’s approach settled behind a temporary concession stand. After several minutes with a rules official, a couple of drops on a cart and a couple of more on a washed-out area of turf, his pitch through a small gap came up short in the rough of the mounded green.

That double-bogey took him to 10 under, at the same time Emiliano Grillo missed a 6-foot par putt a hole ahead to drop to the same score — and a share of the lead, instead of having it outright.

Grillo has a double-bogey and two bogeys over his last six holes in a round of 72 that left him at 6 under and tied for fourth place with Justin Suh (66).

Hall’s approach at the 420-yard seventh flew out of bounds to the right off the green.

When he got to the 13th hole at 9 under, he was coming off a 12-foot birdie at No. 12. But that had followed a scrambling par on the 626-yard 11th hole when he was in the rough after each of his first two shots on what is the course’s longest hole by 80 yards.

“Yeah, to be T1 after today is pretty cool, especially after that front nine,” Hall said. “It goes to show how hard the course is, and I did a good job battling it back and getting those two birdies on that back nine.”

Schenk, also looking for his first win but in his 171st PGA Tour event, closed out a 67 with a 16-foot birdie putt.

“It was a lot of luck making that putt. It was a foot and a half of break and extremely fast,” he said.

The only player to win in back-to-back years was Ben Hogan, who did it twice — 1946 and 1947, the event’s first two years, and again in 1952-53.

Hall’s double-bogeys came at Nos. 6 and 7, after 14 birdies and only two bogeys in his 41 holes before that.

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Harris English quipped to his caddie that no one is beating him at Colonial's par-3 eighth hole, which is true after he followed his birdie in the opening round with a hole-in-one Friday. There is only one player ahead of him on the overall leaderboard.

PGA Tour rookie Harry Hall from England maintained the solo lead through 36 holes at 12-under 128, making a spectacular save from the sand at that same par 3, for a three-stroke lead over English. After opening with an 8-under 62, Hall had four consecutive birdies midway through his second-round 66.

Hall's birdie streak ended with a bogey at the par-4 third, his 12th of the day, when he missed the fairway and then came up short of the green before a two-putt from 9 feet.

In the final group of the day, Hall hit his tee shot at No. 8 into the sand in front of the green. Hall failed to get the ball out of the deep bunker on his first attempt, but saved par by popping it out on the next try to the edge of the green and watching it roll into the cup.

English’s ace at the 170-yard eighth was part of his bogey-free 66.

“Hard 9 ... pushed it about 4 or 5 yards right of where I was aiming, but it’s a good thing that hole got in the way,” English said. “Just one of those shots where I struck it pure, right at the flag.”

His third hole-in-one on the PGA Tour was the first at Colonial’s No. 8 hole since Jim Furyk in 2011.

English was a stroke ahead of Emiliano Grillo, who shot a round-best 65 to get to 8 under. Adam Schnek (67), Byeong Hun An (66) and Robby Shelton (67) were tied for fourth.

Scottie Scheffler, the world's No. 1 player and Colonial runner-up in a playoff last year, had his second consecutive round of 67 and was tied for seventh at 6-under 134. Justin Rose, whose 11 PGA Tour wins include Colonial five years ago, was tied for ninth at 5 under after as bogey-free 66.

Jordan Spieth, still dealing with a sore left wrist, shot 72 both days to miss the cut. The 11th-ranked player had three bogeys and a birdie over his last four holes.

Michael Block, the 46-year-old club pro from California who became a sensation for everyday golfers by tying for 15th Sunday in the PGA Championship at Oak Hill, was last in the 120-player Colonial field at 15-over 155. After his opening 81, he was seven strokes better with a 74 that included back-to-back birdies midway through the round.

It was an exhausting span for Block, who hit only 11 of 28 fairways over two rounds, but was still mingling with fans — signing autographs and taking photos — hours after his final putt before flying home.

Other than the hole-in-one, it was just a steady round for four-time PGA Tour winner English, who had a third-place finish earlier this month at the Wells Fargo Championship. He hit 11 of 14 fairways and 14 of 18 greens.

“When I did get in trouble off the tee or around the green, I got up and down. Made a really nice par on No. 9,” English said. “I had a lot of seemed like 15 or 20-footers and didn’t make much. ... But as long as I keep that ball-striking going and keep giving myself chances, then some good things will happen this weekend.”

Coming off the hole-in-one, English drove into the right rough at No. 9 and then into a greenside bunker before blasting to 6 feet and made the par-saving putt. His only birdie on the back nine was the 12th, when he made a 17-footer off the fringe.

Grillo, the 30-year-old from Argentina, was even on the round before making the turn with a birdie from a greenside bunker at the 389-yard 10th. That was the first of five backside birdies, including long putts on both par 3s — from 19 foot at No. 13, and nearly 38 feet at the 16th — before an approach to 7 feet at No. 18.

“It’s a lot of different clubs off the tee. Got to keep it in the fairway, got to keep it on the green. I would think that’s my strong part of the game,” Grillo said. “I was lucky enough to make a few good putts on the back nine. So happy to finish with a great shot on 18, and a good putt."

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — California club pro Michael Block was living the dream at the PGA Championship. Thursday at Colonial brought him back to reality.

A sensation at Oak Hill when he tied for 15th against the strongest field in golf, Block opened with three straight bogeys and finished with three double bogeys over his last four holes of an 11-over 81 that left him in last place and 19 shots behind Harry Hall in the Charles Schwab Challenge.

Block received a sponsor exemption — he has one for the RBC Canadian Open next week, too — after his amazing week at the PGA Championship. He was on “CBS This Morning,” received a text from Michael Jordan and signed with WME Sports.

“I've got nothing,” he said to himself after a tee shot on the 13th barely cleared the water and finished on the back left of a green that had a front right pin.

“If you are a golfer, you've had the day I've had,” Block said after his worst score by seven shots in the four PGA Tour-level events he has played this year. "You understand the facts of where the lies aren’t good and the trees are in your way every time. Even your good shots are bad, your bad shots are worse.

“It is what it is. I’m going to live with it,” he said. “I thought it was going to happen that third or fourth round last week at Oak Hill, and it never happened. It happened now, and I wasn’t surprised by it, to tell you the truth.”

Hall had a dream start. The PGA Tour rookie from England took only 22 putts, the last one an 8-foot birdie for an 8-under 62 that gave him a three-shot lead over Harris English.

Along with his eight birdies, Hall made par putts of 15 and 30 feet.

Tom Hoge, who played his college golf at TCU and now makes Fort Worth his home, holed out for eagle from the seventh fairway on his way to a 66.

Scottie Scheffler, who returned to No. 1 in the world with his tie for second at the PGA Championship, and defending champion Sam Burns were in the large group at 67. Jordan Spieth didn't make his lone birdie until the eighth hole and opened with a 72.

Hall changed up his routine this week by playing 36 holes of practice at Colonial — a Monday pro-am and then nine holes on Tuesday and Wednesday. That helps, along with his putter.

“Maybe that’s the key, just to see a bit more of the course than I have done in the past,” Hall said. “I didn’t do too much different. I kind of just made things a little bit more simple.”

He missed seven greens and played those holes in 1 under, the biggest a chip-in for birdie from about 80 feet on the 12th hole.

“I was really in the moment out there and determined to play some good golf,” Hall said. “The 7 out of 7 scrambles doesn’t really surprise me because that’s the best part of my game, but the way I hit the ball the first two-thirds of that round was pretty special.”

Block has been on quite a ride the last six days. He made the cut at the PGA Championship, played with Justin Rose on Saturday and Rory McIlroy on Sunday. The 46-year-old head pro at Trabuco Arroyo in Mission Hills, California, turned in a performance as memorable as Brooks Koepka winning his fifth major.

He made a hole-in-one on the 15th hole, and his closing from deep rough gave him a tie for 15th and an automatic spot in next year's PGA Championship.

And then he came crashing back to earth after a week so busy he only saw Colonial one time before Thursday. But he wasn't giving up just yet.

“I’m looking forward to coming out tomorrow and playing a great round and giving it everything I have,” he said. “I’ve shot 58, and I’ve shot a 59 in my life, and since what I had today, I wouldn’t be surprised if I did it. So if I do, cool. If not, I’ll be seeing my kids and my wife tomorrow night in Orange County, California. It’s all good one way or the other.”

Hoge, who was raised in North Dakota, is so passionate about his Horned Frogs that he flew from Maui to Los Angeles to watch TCU in the college football champions game (a blowout loss to Georgia) and then flew back to Hawaii for the Sony Open.

He got off to a decent start until his round stalled. It came to life on No. 6 when his approach settled inches away from the cup. And then on the seventh, he hit 8-iron from 157 yards straight into the cup for an eagle.

It's just the start he needed after missing the cut at Colonial the last three times.

“The last few years, I really struggled on Thursday then kind of fought back on Friday to try to make the cut,” Hoge said. “It was certainly a focus this year to try to get off to a good start, try to be a little more patient and letting the round come to me. Making a few birdies off the bat was really nice.”
