A U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills is arguably the toughest challenge we see in men's professional golf.

Just don't tell that to Wyndham Clark.

The Week of Wyndham continued Saturday, as the 2023 champion stretched his four-shot lead to six with an even-par 70 that was the third-lowest score from the entire field on a challenging day.

The six-shot advantage is the fourth-largest 54-hole edge in the history of the event, and marks just the sixth time someone has led by multiple shots after each of the first three rounds of a U.S. Open, according to Justin Ray of the Twenty First Group.

Clark was unfazed by faster greens and firmer conditions, making countless up-and-downs to save par and avoid dropping shots. That scrambling performance was enough to see him stay well clear of Scottie Scheffler, Sahith Theegala, Tom Kim, and Sam Stevens.

Place	Player	Total to par	Round 3 score
1	Wyndham Clark	-7	70
T-2	Scottie Scheffler	-1	68
T-2	Sahith Theegala	-1	70
T-2	Sam Stevens	-1	72
T-2	Tom Kim	-1	72
T-6	Xander Schauffele	Even	73
T-6	Sam Burns	Even	71
T-6	Emiliano Grillo	Even	67
T-6	Keith Mitchell	Even	70
T-10	Tommy Fleetwood	+1	70
T-10	Collin Morikawa	+1	73
T-10	Matt Fitzpatrick	+1	74

While the leaderboard doesn't show it, Clark did experience a few brief moments of distress Saturday as he attempted to maintain his lead. His ball-striking wasn't at the same level we saw during the opening two rounds, but an incredible scrambling performance kept any stumble to a momentary wobble.

Clark made 55 feet of par putts alone - none bigger than three straight saves of at least five feet on holes 9-11 - to avoid bogeys on numerous occasions. That certainly made things difficult on the chasers, with Scheffler the only one to make a serious run from deep to get under par.

"That's what you have to make to win U.S. Opens," Clark said. "You're not going to have too, too many birdie putts, and when you do miss, it's really hard to hit a gimme, so you've got to make those kind of 5-to-12-footers."

The World No. 1 was one of only two men to shoot under par on the back nine, with Scheffler's 3-under 32 enough to see him fly up the leaderboard into a tie for second. That ended up being significant, as he will now play alongside Clark in the final group - perhaps the worst-case scenario for anybody trying to close out a major championship.

"Scottie is the best player in the world, and he's going to play probably really good," Clark said. "He always does, but it's nice to have a six-shot lead on him. But really I'm just going to keep approaching it the same way. If I go out and execute and go through my process and hit the shots I know I can hit, I like my chances."

"We want to be in these positions," Scheffler said after his round. "This is why we practice and play, to have the opportunity to win golf tournaments, and that's what tomorrow is. I have an opportunity to go out there and have a great round and give myself a chance to win the tournament."

If Scheffler is able to pull off a stunner, he wouldn't just win the U.S. Open, he would become only the seventh man ever to complete the career grand slam.

However, it will take an all-time collapse for Clark to not claim a second U.S. Open title, regardless of who is chasing him. There have been 13 instances where someone has taken a six-shot lead or more into the final round of a major since 1934, with 12 resulting in a win for the leader.

Wyndham Clark appears to be playing a different golf course than the rest of the field through two rounds of the U.S. Open.

Only 10 players will head to the weekend at Shinnecock Hills under par, but Clark made the iconic layout look pedestrian en route to a 36-hole scoring record of 7-under.

That gives the 2023 champion a four-shot lead through two rounds - the biggest margin at the U.S. Open since 2018, the last time the Long Island course hosted.

Clark didn't have the same form he showed in his sizzling 64 on Thursday and headed to the 12th at 1-over for his round. However, the American's putter got hot, with birdie putts of 28 and 33 feet helping him flip the script and post a 1-under 69. He has a comfortable cushion over the trio of Matthew Fitzpatrick, Xander Schauffele, and Sam Stevens tied for second.

Position	Player	Total to par	Round 2 score
1	Wyndham Clark	-7	69
T-2	Xander Schauffele	-3	66
T-2	Matt Fitzpatrick	-3	70
T-2	Sam Stevens	-3	69
T-2	Tom Kim	-3	67
6	Collin Morikawa	-2	65
T-7	Sam Burns	-1	68
T-7	Justin Thomas	-1	68

Clark's four-shot lead is a significant number that could both deflate the chasers and give them hope: According to Justin Ray of the Twenty First Group, 28 of the last 30 U.S. Open champions have been within three shots of the lead through 36 holes.

But one of the two exceptions was 2018 at Shinnecock Hills, when Brooks Koepka came from five behind to win. Clark is also 1-for-5 in his PGA TOUR career at converting 36-hole leads into wins.

Should Clark falter on the weekend, there's still plenty of firepower around to chase him down. Fitzpatrick, Schauffele, Collin Morikawa, Justin Thomas, Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler, Gary Woodland, and Brian Harman are all major champions tied for 11th or better.

Firmer conditions on the notoriously difficult Shinnecock setup this weekend could also help bring the field closer to Clark. While the course is historically one of the hardest on the U.S. Open rotation, this week's setup has yielded plenty of uncharacteristic low scores.

Friday's scoring average of 72.3 was the fifth-lowest scoring second round in U.S. Open history.

We expected afternoon carnage with intense winds at Shinnecock Hills, but the most violent display late on Day 1 of the U.S. Open was Wyndham Clark attacking a vulnerable golf course.

The 2023 champion was part of the afternoon wave that played in significantly easier conditions at the iconic layout, and he took full advantage with some brilliant shotmaking. Clark made five birdies and an eagle through holes to build a massive four-shot lead at 6-under when play was halted due to darkness.

Clark would finish off his 64 with two pars in the morning to become the first man ever to start a U.S. Open twice with that score after he did so during his victory at Los Angeles Country Club three years ago.

However, the massive four-shot lead was cut in half Friday morning by one of Clark's playing partners, Dustin Johnson. The 2016 champion birdied two of his remaining three holes to reach 4-under and make Clark's advantage only two heading to the second round.

Gary Woodland also finished with a flourish to post 3-under and sit tied with Matt Fitzpatrick in third. Woodland was the third man in the group with Clark and Johnson, with that trio combining to shoot an absurd 13-under and sit 1-2-3 on the leaderboard.

Clark started on the 10th tee and made the turn at 3-under. As the conditions continued to improve, Clark kept heating up, punctuated by a birdie-birdie-eagle stretch on holes 3-5.

Jon Rahm is certainly the biggest name at 2-under, with a round that is one of particular interest due to his bogey avoidance. The entire 2018 U.S. Open was played at the Long Island venue without a bogey-free round, but the Spaniard did just that with two birdies and 16 pars.

The late afternoon wind gusts of 60 mph never materialized, and a two-hour fog delay early in the morning actually helped the afternoon wave immensely with easier scoring conditions. Sam Stevens is the only man on the leaderboard inside the top 9 that played in the morning group of players.

That puts an emphasis on the 1-under rounds of names like Rory McIlroy and Ludvig Aberg, who played in the tougher weather early.

The weather forecast is calling for 25 mph wind gusts throughout the day in Round 2. While that's a respite of sorts from early Thursday, the heavy winds are expected to return Saturday.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Harris English held off hard-charging Sam Stevens to win the Farmers Insurance Open by one shot Saturday, securing his fifth career PGA Tour victory with a 1-over 73 in challenging weather at Torrey Pines.

English finished his first tour win since 2021 at 8-under 280. Stevens began the day six shots off the lead, but surged into contention with a 68 for the best final round in this edition of a tournament with a tradition of furious final-day rallies.

Stevens was playing six groups ahead, but his impressive number didn’t rattle the 35-year-old English, who made two early bogeys in a round that began amid strong wind blowing in a different direction than it did in previous rounds. English steadied his game and calmly finished with 12 consecutive pars.

“It’s hard to win,” English said. “I might have looked calm out there on the course, but inside your emotions are going crazy. I just know how hard it is to win. It’s just so much fun. You’ve got to soak it in when you do it.”

English was businesslike to the end: He put his tee shot on the 18th into the rough, but got back into the fairway before putting his 115-yard approach shot squarely on the green. He two-putted for the victory, rolling his 25-footer to 7 inches for a tap-in and a subdued celebration.

Andrew Novak was third at 6 under, missing out on his first tour victory with a disappointing 74 after briefly taking the lead.

Sungjae Im and Kris Ventura tied for fourth at 5 under.

English hadn’t won since surviving an eight-hole playoff with Kramer Hickok at the Travelers Championships in 2021, although he still had nine top-10 finishes in the previous two seasons after missing five months in early 2022 while recovering from hip surgery. English already had a strong history at Torrey Pines, where he lost a four-way playoff to Jason Day in 2015 and then finished third at the U.S. Open in 2021.

English surged into the lead Friday with three straight birdies to close his third-round 66, capitalizing on the mildest day of weather to make his move at the gorgeous coastal course.

The wind that forced an 86-minute delay in the second round Thursday returned in intermittent force early Saturday on the oceanside holes, although it calmed somewhat in the afternoon. Lanto Griffin wore a wooly white beanie with a pompom on top, while many fans broke out winter jackets that don’t normally get much use in San Diego.

Novak and English, who live on the same island in coastal Georgia, played together in the final group — and while English overcame his early hiccups, Novak was up and down.

Novak opened with two bogeys, but then surged into the lead with three straight birdies. He rolled in an astonishing 54-foot putt on the fifth, reading the drop from the green’s top tier perfectly. Novak put both hands to his head in disbelief.

“That putt on 5, I could hit that a hundred times and not even sniff the hole again,” Novak said. “Just crazy.”

Novak made three bogeys and a birdie around the turn, while English began his string of pars, repeatedly getting up and down with minimal fuss.

Stevens finished his round about 90 minutes before Novak and English, keeping pressure on the leaders. Novak couldn’t apply his own pressure to English, making no birdies on the back nine.

“It was just a roller coaster on that front nine,” Novak said. “Finally got it settled in on the back, but just wasn’t hanging approach shots close enough to give myself birdie opportunities.”

Stevens turned pro in 2018 and joined the tour in 2023. The Oklahoma State product matched his best previous result in his runner-up finish to Corey Connors at the Valero Texas Open in April 2023.

He charged up the leaderboard at Torrey Pines despite the wind, making four birdies on the front nine. Stevens even saved par on the 18th after putting his second shot in the water while trying to reach the green in two.

“These greens are tricky, especially (when) you get a little wind,” Stevens said. “Today I just made the putts. I guess they had just been waiting ‘til Sunday to go in for me, and sometimes that’s how it goes. You take ‘em when you get ’em.”

World No. 4 Hideki Matsuyama finished at 1 over. He’ll be back in San Diego in three weeks to defend his title at the Genesis Invitational, which has been moved from Riviera to Torrey Pines.

Ludvig Aberg, who led after each of the first two rounds, finished at 3 over after battling through illness in his final two rounds.
