After 10 years, a shift in the schedule from August to May, and a cosmetic and functional restoration to the course, the PGA Championship returns to Oak Hill Country Club. Like Jason Dufner or Shaun Micheel before, will a longshot strike for their lone major championship victory? Or will it be one of seemingly dozens of reasonable contenders in what look like breezy and lush conditions in western New York?

Justin Thomas is +2200 to defend a PGA Championship won at a comparable Southern Hills - the site of his 2022 come-from-behind victory. We'll pass on betting on that accomplishment, instead looking to a handful of others in various markets.

The top shelf

Jon Rahm, Scottie Scheffler, or Rory McIlroy?

We looked at this trio before The Masters and used some basic logic to find the winner with Jon Rahm, as he had the longest odds - as high as 10-to-1. That same thinking applies to Rory McIlroy this time around, as he's +1200 compared to the two favorites at +800.

McIlroy understood that he needed some time off after The Masters, and we won't take much away from a lacklustre showing in his return at the Wells Fargo Championship. He was fifth at Southern Hills last year in strokes gained: tee-to-green, and he was tied for eighth at Oak Hill in 2013. He's plus-money in head-to-head matchups with Rahm, and with driving accuracy seemingly so important this week, his strength could help snap his major drought. That would please a recent volunteer coaching assistant - a fellow by the name of Tiger Woods.

Top draws (odds to win/top 20)

Golfers more valuable than their odds suggest this week:

Viktor Hovland (+2800 / +137)

After back-to-back top 10s in majors, Viktor Hovland should feel like he's getting close to breaking through and at a point where he's less worried about the regular events, instead tuning up for the big ones. Even without a PGA Tour win in 2023, Hovland is sixth in strokes gained: off the tee. With tight fairways and punishing rough at Oak Hill, the type of ball-striking that Hovland can execute in the wind should be an advantage. At even-money, he's a good bet for top Scandinavian.

Tommy Fleetwood (+6000 / +220)

Speaking of premium ball-strikers, Tommy Fleetwood was 11th in strokes gained: tee-to-green at Southern Hills last year, and more recently fifth in the same category two weeks ago at Quail Hollow - a former and future major site. Asking for a win might be excessive, but better than 2-to-1 is a good price for contention from Fleetwood.

Tom Kim (+9000 / +280)

One of our favorites to have a big year, Tom Kim hasn't had the results we hoped for after wins in 2022. However, he's fourth in driving accuracy on the tour and was eighth in strokes gained: tee-to-green at Quail Hollow - a metric that positively underlies a T23 finish. He's +500 to top Sungjae Im, Hideki Matsuyama, and Si Woo Kim for top Asian this week.

Gary Woodland (+8000 / +350)

Capable of handling the length of major courses, Gary Woodland comes in having finished second in SG: tee-to-green at Quail Hollow. The thing we like most about Woodland, though, is his matchup with Bryson DeChambeau. A -150 price tag implies that Woodland needs to beat him 60% of the time, and with the way DeChambeau has trended, that's a fair price.

Adam Scott (+8000 / +260)

A testament to his longevity, Adam Scott is the only player with quality results at Oak Hill in both 2013 (T5) and 2003 (T23). Now he comes in with back-to-back top 10s and gets a beneficial matchup with Corey Conners, who's missed the cut in five of his last six U.S. majors outside of Augusta National.

LIV'ing it up

Dustin Johnson (+2500)

Brooks Koepka won the LIV event right before The Masters, and his performance through three rounds at Augusta National reminded the golf world that the best of those that left the PGA Tour still have high-end ability even without much competition the rest of the year.

That reminder might come again, this time from Dustin Johnson, who won last week. At +400 to be the top LIV member, DJ has the best chance to contend among the rogue group. We don't get strokes gained statistics from those events, but with contending efforts at Winged Foot in 2021, a top 10 back in 2013, and numerous other results at brawny courses built for his game, Johnson might be ready to add a third different major title at what seems like a bigger price than what it would be had he opted to stay in the PGA Tour's spotlight.

The scary fade

A golfer with high expectations who's worth betting to miss the cut at a big price

Sahith Theegala (+150 to miss cut)

If we like good drivers of the ball, we should dislike bad drivers, right? Sahith Theegala is great at escaping from the places where his 155th-best driving accuracy puts him week-to-week, but that's not going to work out of the rough of Oak Hill. If he spends half his second shots coming out of the thick grass, it will be a quick week for Theegala.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) Jason Dufner is going back to the U.S. Open for the 10th straight year, and this time he had to play his way in through one of 10 qualifiers across three countries Monday in the longest day in golf.

Luke Guthrie took a detour from the Web.com Tour and led the 14 qualifiers out of Columbus, the strongest of all sectionals with so many PGA Tour players who stayed around after the Memorial. He returns to the U.S. Open for the first time in five years.

He arrived from the Web event in North Carolina a little past midnight. He was headed to South Carolina on Tuesday morning to resume his Web schedule. And then he had to find a place to stay for the U.S. Open.

''I told my wife, `It might cost us $1,000 a night.' But it's Pebble Beach. Who cares?'' Guthrie said.

The U.S. Open is June 13-16, the sixth time it is being held at Pebble Beach. Also qualifying from Columbus was Sam Saunders, whose late grandfather Arnold Palmer was among the principal owners of Pebble Beach.

Sixty spots were available at eight sites in the U.S., one in Canada and one in England. Fifteen players previously made it through 36-hole qualifiers in Dallas and Japan.

Dufner finished with a double bogey at the Memorial to fall into a tie for seventh, and then headed to Scioto some 12 hours later for 36 more holes. He was bogey-free at the tougher of the courses, and held on for a 71 at Brookside. He had been exempt for his previous nine appearances in the U.S. Open.

''All the way back to Rickie Fowler's rookie year if that tells you anything,'' Dufner said.

The clutch moment from Ohio came from Kyoung-Hoon Lee, who birdied the 18th hole at Scioto to make it an even 14 players to finish at 5 under or better. If he had made par, there would have been an 8-for-1 playoff for the last spot.

Instead, seven players went extra holes to determine the first alternate out of the sectional. That went to Joel Dahmen, and odds are he will be at Pebble Beach. The U.S. Open is holding six spots for anyone who might get into the top 60 in the world after next week.

Anirban Lahiri of India did not have to qualify for his previous two U.S. Opens, and he doesn't want to have to go through it again. Lahiri had no trouble with a 65 at Scioto and a 67 at Brookside, but he could do without the stress. He had never seen either course, opting for what he called ''point and shoot.''

''Playing this is a grind,'' Lahiri said. ''The Memorial is a tough event. You get off the course and you're pretty beat up, physically and mentally. And then you have to keep going for 36 holes. I didn't keep a yardage book because I didn't want the mental work.''

Among those missing out was Steve Stricker, the 52-year-old old Ryder Cup captain, who had made it through qualifying each of the last two years. In his threesome were Julian Suri and Kelby Brown, a local qualifier from Texas who shot 84 at Scioto and 92 at Brookside, missing out by 39 shots.

A pair of college stars made it against a field of mostly PGA Tour players - Cal senior Collin Morikawa and Stanford senior Brandon Wu, who is on a roll. Wu won his match to help Stanford win the NCAA title five days ago in Arkansas. He flew to Ohio to get ready for the qualifier, returns to Arkansas for the Palmer Cup this week and then plays his first U.S. Open.

''It's a surreal feeling,'' Wu said. ''It's starting to sink in. Graduation is on Sunday of the U.S. Open. The idea is to make the cut, and then maybe wear my cap and gown down the 18th fairway.''

ENGLAND

Dean Burmester of South Africa had rounds of 63-65 at Walton Heath to lead 14 players in the qualifier at England. Others who made it to Pebble Beach are Sam Horsfield of England, Thomas Pieters of Belgium and Renato Paratore of Italy, who earned the last spot in a 5-for-1 playoff with a birdie on the second hole.

Lee Westwood missed the playoff by three shots. It will be the second straight year Westwood does not qualify for the U.S. Open, after playing 11 straight years.

FLORIDA

LSU senior Luis Gagne earned one of three spots at Streamsong Resort with rounds of 65-69 to earn a return to the U.S. Open. Gagne, a 21-year-old from Costa Rica, shared low amateur honors last year at Shinnecock Hills with Massachusetts firefighter Matt Parziale.

Callus Tarren of England led the qualifiers at 14-under 132. Also qualifying was Guillermo Pereira.

NEW YORK

Parziale, who qualified last year as the U.S. Mid-Amateur champion and tied for 48th, gets to return to Pebble Beach. He had rounds of 69-73 in Purchase, New York, to get one of the four spots. Cameron Young, a senior at Wake Forest whose father is the head pro at Sleepy Hollow, led the qualifiers at 4-under 137. Joining them were Andy Pope and Rob Oppenheim.

CANADA

Tom Hoge and Sepp Straka led four qualifiers in the first U.S. Open sectional held in Canada. It was moved to Rattlesnake Point Golf Club from Memphis, Tennessee, because of a change in the PGA Tour schedule that puts the Canadian Open a week before the U.S. Open.

Nate Lashley and Alex Prugh advanced in a 3-for-2 playoff, with Harris English the first alternate. Three-time major champion Padraig Harrington finished with eight straight pars and missed the playoff by two shots.

GEORGIA

Ollie Schniederjans made it through qualifying for the second straight year with rounds of 68-65 at Hawks Ridge outside Atlanta, leading four players to qualify. Roberto Castro made par on his last hole to avoid a playoff. The other qualifiers were a pair of amateurs, Noah Norton and Chandler Eaton.

MARYLAND

Former Navy officer Billy Hurley III made it back to his first U.S. Open in three years in a tight qualifier at Woodmont Country Club outside Washington. Hurley had rounds of 70-71 to share medalist honors with Connor Arendell at 3-under 141. Joseph Bramlett, who played at Stanford, and Ryan Sullivan were one shot behind and survived a 3-for-2 playoff.

OHIO

Brian Stuard prefers playing the other Ohio sectional even though it offers fewer spots, and he showed why. Stuard made it to his fifth U.S. Open, all five times qualifying from Springfield Country Club. He shared medalist honors at 6-under 134 with Zac Blair and Nick Hardy.

Brett Drewitt of Australia earned the last spot in a playoff over Joo-Young Lee.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) Joel Dahmen held his own playing in the final group for the first time and wound up in a three-way tie for the lead with Jason Dufner and Max Homa on a stormy Saturday at the Wells Fargo Championship.

Very much in the mix was Rory McIlroy, who was reminded at every turn that it was his 30th birthday. He had a 3-under 68 and was two shots behind.

Dahmen and Homa each dropped a shot over the last three holes for a 70. Dufner atoned for consecutive bogeys with consecutive birdies on the back nine for a 71. They were at 11-under 202.

Pat Perez had a bogey-free 66 through two rain delays and was one shot behind.

Jason Dufner charged into the lead at the Wells Fargo Championship on Friday, firing an 8-under 63 at Quail Hollow Club to take a one-shot edge into the weekend.

Perhaps "strolled" is a better word for the laidback 42-year-old's single-day rise up the leaderboard, which got him to 12-under for the tournament. His outing consisted of seven birdies, an eagle, and a single bogey in which he missed a 3-footer for par. It's his lowest score on the Tour since shooting 63 at the 2013 PGA Championship, a tournament he won.

The most shocking performance of the day belonged to Phil Mickelson, who carded an abysmal 5-over 76 to miss the cut at Quail Hollow for only the second time in the last 11 years. He recorded eight top-11 finishes at the Wells Fargo Championship over that stretch.

Joel Dahmen and Max Homa trail Dufner by one. Dahmen posted his second 66 of the week and Homa matched the leader's score with an 8-under round of his own.

Rory McIlroy and Patrick Reed round out the top five, but both are five strokes back of Dufner with 36 holes remaining. McIlroy, who shared the lead after Day 1, looked to be in total control until playing his final two holes at 3-over par. Reed later joined McIlroy at 6-under with a 69 in Round 2.

Notables Justin Rose and Jason Day are at 5-under and in need of big moving-day performances to jump back into contention for Sunday.

Jason Dufner charged into the lead at the Wells Fargo Championship on Friday, firing an 8-under 63 at Quail Hollow Club to take a one-shot edge into the weekend.

The stars are out for this week's Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village Golf Club, hosted by Jack Nicklaus. As in most years, the game's biggest names will appear in Dublin, Ohio, to honor "the Golden Bear" from Thursday to Sunday.

Tiger Woods, who, of course, will headline the event, makes his first trip back to Muirfield Village since 2015. The five-time winner of Nicklaus' event will be grouped with defending champion Jason Dufner and last's week's winner, 2010 Memorial champion Justin Rose.

Fans of firepower should look to the group of Jason Day, Dustin Johnson, and Rory McIlroy. The three former No. 1-ranked golfers will all be searching for their first Memorial win. Expect plenty of highlight-reel shots from this trio in Rounds 1 and 2.

Jordan Spieth will play his opening rounds alongside two lefties in Phil Mickelson and Bubba Watson. Of the three Masters champions, who are all winless at Muirfield Village, Spieth is the only one without a win in the 2018 season.

The last featured group consists of world No. 1 Justin Thomas, reigning Masters champ Patrick Reed, and Rickie Fowler. Thomas and Reed will look to continue their Player of the Year-caliber seasons, while Fowler is still searching for his first win in 2018.

Tee times for the featured groups can be found here.

With Webb Simpson so far out in front at The Players Championship, all eyes were on the tightly contested battle for second.

At 14-under par, Jason Dufner entered the final hole Sunday alone in second after posting six birdies on the day. \"Duffman\" stuck his approach shot to within 17 feet and looked to be in great shape to walk away with a cool $1.188 million.

Instead, Dufner proceeded to 3-putt his way into a tie for fifth.

Dufner's $418,000 haul isn't bad for four days' work, but $770,000 is a steep price to pay for a few extra putts.

The missed par putt also cost Dufner 215 FedEx Cup points, as the 41-year-old would've walked away with 330 had he converted the tricky 3-footer.
