The PGA's version of March Madness goes off Wednesday in Austin, Texas. Since there are so many matches, the tournament is starting a day earlier. The combination of pool play and single-elimination matches allows for upsets while making it more difficult than ever for a fluke outright winner. Instead of beating 100-plus golfers over four days, the champion only has to be better than one other player per round.

Because of the change in format for this week's match-play event, we'll tweak our format for our best bets. Starting with who's the best play to win their four-player pod, and then looking at Wednesday's opening round matches - where underdogs should be the order of the day - there should be more action than you can keep track of before we even see a bracket for the weekend.

Group best bets

Golfers more valuable than their odds suggest this week:

Group 1: Tom Kim (+330)

Tom Kim was a bright spot in the President's Cup last fall, and his world ranking of 19 is better than his seed (32). Kim would need to at least draw with fellow Texas resident Scottie Scheffler, but if both are safe by the time they go head-to-head, getting a +330 price on Kim would be valuable.

Group 2: Billy Horschel (+450)

Speaking of tough players to go head-to-head with, Billy Horschel won this event two years ago. While he's struggled recently to make the weekend, he's prone to snap out of mini-skids with big performances. Horschel is the longest shot in the group, but he might be the best player outside of Jon Rahm, who's an unplayable +110.

Group 3: Keegan Bradley (+300)

As long as we're betting against the game's top three golfers, we might as well go away from Rory McIlroy. Not only does Bradley also have Ryder/President's Cup match-play experience, but he's capable of edging McIlroy in an event that Rory hasn't had great results at historically. Bradley has had some highs and lows this season, but short-term variance works in this event.

Group 7: Andrew Putnam (+350)

Datagolf.com's No. 1 player for course fit at Austin Golf and Country Club? Andrew Putnam. He's outside the top 64 in OWGR, but this tournament has a history of surprise success stories. Why not play someone projected to gain a quarter of a stroke per round due to course fit? Will Zalatoris is the group's top seed, and he's vulnerable.

Group 10: Christiaan Bezuidenhout (+300)

Right behind Putnam in AGCC course fit? Christiaan Bezuidenhout. Tony Finau and Kurt Kitayama, a more recent winner, are ahead of him on the oddsboard, but Bezuidenhout is in good form as well.

Group 11: Min Woo Lee (+275)

Min Woo Lee has the swagger. Now, we get to see if he has the game to be a problem for opponents in match play. He's a pick'em against Sahith Theegala in the opener, but let's take him to win the group since we don't have head-to-head odds against the group leader yet.

Group 15: Corey Conners (+225)

No one in this group is in amazing form, so we'll rely on Conners, who made a run to last year's semifinals. Favored in his other two matchups, this is essentially a play on the Canadian to out-ball-strike Cameron Young at a place Conners has excelled at.

Matchups

Harris English (-115) over Ryan Fox

One of the few favorites to play will be a slight one in Harris English, whose good is better than Ryan Fox's good. Fox has come over from the DP World Tour and had good results in Florida, but English fits well on this course and is more likely to go low in Austin.

Kevin Kisner (+140) over Hideki Matsuyama

Matsuyama snapped out of his slump at The Players Championship. However, if he was hoping to ease into match play, that won't happen with the presence of Kevin Kisner, who's made the final three different times at this event. Matsuyama has yet to make this tournament's Sweet 16.

Adam Svensson (+125) over Jason Day

One bad round has tripped up Adam Svensson in recent tournaments, but this format allows for mistakes. We'll bet that this isn't his bad round, and while Jason Day is the bigger name, Svensson is more than capable of an upset than +150 suggests.

Outrights

The path to victory is uncertain under this format, and like tournaments in team sports, you're probably best advised to wait until a bracket is available and a path can be handicapped. One of our other favorites, Max Homa, is +2200. However, he has to survive pool play and then win five matches against competition where he's not going to be that heavy of a favorite in even the first knockout round.

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. (AP) — Harry Higgs lost his full PGA Tour card toward the end of last season and took a step Friday at Sea Island toward getting it back.

Higgs played bogey-free on the more difficult Seaside course for a 7-under 63, giving him a share of the lead with recent Texas grad Cole Hammer and Andrew Putnam going into the week of the RSM Classic.

Even without anyone from the top 20 in the world at Sea Island, plenty is at stake in the final official PGA Tour event before a six-week break to end the year.

Hammer, who had a 66 at Seaside, is playing on a sponsor exemption and has no full status on any tour.

Putnam, whose only PGA Tour title was in 2018, had a 65 on the Plantation course. He is playing for the eighth time in 10 weeks, having missed only the Bermuda Championship in the fall because he's made every cut — he was a runner-up in Japan — and because the weather isn't all that great at home near Seattle.

Higgs is an everyman, popular among his peers, and it stung to finish last season the way he did. After he tied for 14th in his Masters debut, Higgs missed the cut in 10 of his last 14 events to finish out of the top 125 in the FedEx Cup. He went to the Korn Ferry Tour Finals and missed the cut in all three of those tournaments.

Now he has conditional status, and this presents a great opportunity. Job security can be stressful on the PGA Tour, especially going into a season in which only 70 will qualify for the lucrative postseason.

“It's in the back of your mind. It always is for almost everybody except for some of the top players in the world,” Higgs said. “But it can motivate you to work a little bit harder, make better decisions. The goal is to not really have to worry about it come March or as early as possible, right?”

The leaders were at 12-under 130.

Joel Dahmen (64 on Plantation), Beau Hossler (67 on Plantation) and Sahith Theegala, who matched Higgs with a 63 on Seaside, were one shot behind.

Dahmen won in the Dominican Republic last year and his exemption runs out after this season. He often rooms with Higgs, so he can appreciate the feeling of playing with the pressure of trying to keep a job.

“Golf is very hard and it can go sour quickly. To play with freedom for ... two-and-a-half years, really, never had that in my career. So yeah, teeing up in Napa was like, ‘OK, we’re back at square one. If you don't play well, you don't have a job.' I was very aware of that.

“I don't think about it necessarily when I'm out there, but there's been a couple extra days of practice, for sure.”

The weather wasn't quite as cold as the opening round, and scoring remained low. The cut was at 4-under 138.

Hammer, who made his first PGA Tour cut as a pro last week in Houston, made bogeys from the fairway on the seventh and eighth holes at Seaside — two of the easier holes for the day — and then turned it around with an approach to 3 feet on No. 9 and then a birdie putt from 18 feet on the next hole.

He was bogey-free the rest of the way and will be in the final group on the weekend.

“I was a little bit depressed after 7 and 8. I put myself in great position to make birdies and I walked out with two bogeys, and that’s almost inexcusable,” Hammer said. “But coming back firing on 9 and then making a birdie on 10 — erasing those bogeys on two of the tougher holes right away — was huge for momentum and for confidence.”

INZAI CITY, Japan (AP) — Rickie Fowler and Andrew Putnam were tied with a one-stroke lead after Friday's second round of the Zozo Championship, where scores were low with drier conditions after rain in the first round.

It was a tougher day for former Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama, who is also the defending champion and the hometown favorite. He was 10 strokes off the pace after a 69. He opened with a 71 on Thursday.

Putnam had an 8-under 62 and Fowler was in at 63, putting both Americans at 10-under after two rounds at the Accordia Golf Narashino Country Club on the outskirts of Tokyo.

The low round with a 61 — and a course record — went to John Huh. The American was two strokes off the pace.

One stroke behind the leaders was Keegan Bradley with a 65.

Huh was asked if he had a round of 59 on his mind.

“Not really,” he said. “I knew if I made a couple more birdies it would have been nice, but I really never thought about a 59 in my head."

The Zozo Championship is the only PGA Tour event in Japan with a purse of $11 million.

Dry conditions are expected for the third round with rain possible on Sunday.

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (AP) — Jordan Spieth put himself into the mix Saturday at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am title, and he lived to tell about it.

On a day when Seamus Power went backward to allow a half-dozen other players back in the game, Spieth went backward just to make sure he didn't fall over a 60-foot cliff

Even if it might have looked more dangerous than it was, his approach from the edge of the cliff on the eighth hole at Pebble Beach stole the show on a Saturday that typically belongs to Bill Murray, Macklemore and the rest of the celebrities.

Spieth had a 9-under 63, his career low at Pebble Beach, to go from 10 strokes behind Power to one shot behind the leading trio of Beau Hossler, Andrew Putnam and Tom Hoge.

“That was by far the most nerve-wracking shot I've ever hit in my life,” Spieth said to caddie Michael Greller after his shot went just left of the green.

His tee shot ran out through the fairway, short of going over the edge. Keeping all the weight on his right leg, Spieth hit the shot and immediately backpedaled to level ground. From the rough, he chipped down the slippery green to 18 feet and made the par putt.

It was high entertainment on a Saturday built for such theatrics. And while the celebrities attracted a big gallery that lined fairways on another glorious day, the final round was loaded with possibilities.

Hossler had a 65 at Pebble Beach, narrowly missing a second eagle of the round on the 18th hole. He was the first to reach 15-under 200.

Putnam started on the back nine at Pebble Beach and ran off five straight birdies with hardly anyone watching, finishing with a par for a 68 at Pebble Beach. Hoge was at Spyglass Hill and shot a 68 to join them.

Patrick Cantlay, at No. 4 the highest-ranked player in the field, started and finished his round with a pair of birdies and didn't do a lot in between. He had a 68 and was one shot behind, along with Spieth and Joel Dahmen (66 at Spyglass).

“I'm in great position and I love this golf course and everyone will be playing on the same golf course tomorrow so it should be fun,” Cantlay said.

A key figure in all this fun was Power, the 34-year-old Irishman, who set the 36-hole tournament record at 128 and looked as though he could do wrong.

He had a five-shot lead to par and a four-shot lead on strokes, but his round at par-71 Monterey Peninsula became a struggle off the tee and round the greens. Power had consecutive birdies to get back to 16 under — even for the day — until bogeys on two of his last three holes for a 74.

Even so, he was only two shots behind going into the final round.

Spieth went out in 31, highlighted by an approach up the hill to 3 feet on the par-5 sixth for an eagle and his two 18-footers to close out the front nine, the par on No. 8 and a birdie on No. 9.

He finished with a tee shot on the par-3 17th that took a hard bounce off the springy green, grazed the flag and settled 8 feet away for a birdie. On the iconic par-5 closing hole, his second shot tumbled onto the green and ran near the hole until it stopped on the fringe, leaving 20 feet and two putts for a final birdie.

Jason Day, who tied for third third at Torrey Pines as the former No. 1 player in the world tries to regain his form, kept alive his hopes with a 70 at Spyglass. He was four shots behind.

Hossler and Hoge are the only players among the leading seven who have yet to win on the PGA Tour. Hoge had a chance two weeks ago in the California desert.

Hossler was bogey-free, a steady round with very little stress.

“Pebble can give and take so quickly, right? I was glad to be on the receiving end today,” he said. “I hit it well, played really conservatively, frankly, even though it might not look like it, and was fortunate to not have any misses really get me in significant trouble.”
