The PGA Tour is another step closer to removing the secondary-cut rule and reducing the number of players who make the cut to 65, Golf Channel's Rex Hoggard reports.

Under the current rule, the top 70 players and ties make the weekend. If 78 or more players advance, a secondary cut is enforced for the final round where, again, those inside the top 70 and ties after Round 3 play Sunday.

At the Wells Fargo Championship in early May, the Player Advisory Council apparently reviewed the secondary cut, which was implemented in 2008, and supported the new cut size. The proposed changes were first tabled in March.

The council also considered adjusting the purse breakdown under the proposed top 65 and ties rule. They agreed to increase the winner's payout from 18 percent to 20 percent instead of distributing the additional funds to a wider range of players.

The new cut size is reportedly expected to receive final approval during the next meeting on June 24 at the Travelers Championship. If passed, the new rules would be in place for the 2019-20 season.
