Todd Nelson is reportedly heading back to the AHL.
Nelson, who replaced Dallas Eakins as interim head coach of the Edmonton Oilers in December, will be the next head coach of the Detroit Red Wings' AHL affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins, according to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman.
Nelson spent more than four seasons as head coach of Edmonton's AHL affiliate, the Oklahoma City Barons, prior to his brief NHL promotion. He will fill the coaching vacancy left by Jeff Blashill, who took Mike Babcock's place as head coach of the Red Wings.
Nelson posted a 161-105-42 record with Oklahoma City and went 17-25-9 with Edmonton. His tenure with the Oilers came to an end when the franchise hired Todd McLellan as their new head coach in May.
