The Detroit Red Wings have called a news conference for Tuesday morning, where it's expected they will introduce Jeff Blashill as the club's new head coach.

Blashill spent the last three seasons with the Grand Rapids Griffins, guiding the Red Wings' AHL affiliate to its first Calder Cup championship in 2013.

He served as an assistant coach with the Red Wings in 2011-12 before being named Griffins head coach for the following season.

General manager Ken Holland said last month that he was waiting to announce Mike Babcock's successor until the conclusion of the Griffins' season. They were eliminated from the playoffs by the Utica Comets last week.

Babcock was named head coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs in May after spending 10 seasons behind the Red Wings' bench.

At the time, Holland said Blashill was the leading candidate to replace him.

Blashill signed a three-year contract last June.
