This Day in Hockey History
1995 - Islanders hand coaching reins to Milbury
The New York Islanders name Mike Milbury as their new head coach, replacing Lorne Henning, who had been released following the 1994-95 NHL season.
In 191 games behind the bench, Milbury guides the team to a record of 56-111-24.
For his efforts, Milbury is later promoted to general manager.
Milbury becomes most known for several blunders in that role, including trading the likes of Zdeno Chara and Roberto Luongo, drafting Rick DiPietro first overall and his decision to include the second overall draft pick in 2001 (used to select Jason Spezza) in the infamous Alexei Yashin deal - who remains on the team's payroll despite having not played in the NHL since 2007.
Needless to say, it may have been a mistake to bring him aboard on this day almost 20 years ago.
2000 - Coach King in Columbus
The Columbus Blue Jackets name Dave King as their first head coach in franchise history.
King coaches two full seasons, finishing last in the division, before being fired midway into his third season.
His record behind the bench is 64-106-21-13 (W-L-T-OTL) at the end of his tenure.
