Only five times in the history of Stanley Cup Final play has a team gone down 2-0 in the series - the deficit currently facing the New York Rangers in the 2014 Stanley Cup Final against the Los Angeles Kings - and come back to hoist Lord Stanley's mug.
Here are the top three Stanley Cup Final comebacks.
1942
The Red Wings swept the first two games in Toronto and blew out the Maple Leafs decisively in Game 3. Carl Liscombe scored five minutes into the third period of Game 4, putting the Red Wings just 15 minutes away from a Stanley Cup Final sweep.
But things went off the rails. After Leafs leading scorer Syl Apps tied the game, Nick Metz - inserted into the lineup along with Hank Goldup in a desperation move by Maple Leafs head coach Syl Apps - scored the eventual game winner.
Late in the game, Detroit's Eddie Wares was assessed a misconduct and refused to leave the ice. While Wares was barking at him, referee Mel Harwood dropped the puck for a faceoff and promptly assessed Wares an additional penalty for two many men on the ice.
Wares' distaste for Harwood's behavior was shared by Red Wings coach Adam who, following a profane tirade, attacked the referee and punched him in the face. Harwood and NHL President Frank Calder were escorted out of the rink under police protection, and Adams was suspended indefinitely.
Game 5 was a blowout 9-3 victory for the Maple Leafs, and Turk Broda shut out the Red Wings in Game 6 to force a seventh game, which the Maple Leafs ultimately won 3-1.
2009
During the rematch 2009 Stanley Cup Final between the Detroit Red Wings and the Pittsburgh Penguins, the two teams had met in the Final the season previous with the Red Wings emerging victorious in six games, the Pittsburgh Penguins fell behind 2-0 in the series following a pair of 3-1 losses in Detroit.
Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby took over once the series shifted to Pittsburgh, evening the series with a pair of stellar individual efforts (Malkin in Game 3, Crosby in Game 4). But the momentum generated by Pittsburgh's young superstars didn't last, and the Red Wings destroyed the Penguins 5-0 in Game 5 to move within a game of the Stanley Cup.
In Game 6, Penguins third-liners Tyler Kennedy and Jordan Staal did the damage in a 2-1 victory. In Game 7, Max Talbot emerged as a hero with two second-period goals, but the Penguins still needed some late-game heroics from Fleury:
2011
The juggernaut Vancouver Canucks were up 2-0 over the Boston Bruins during the 2011 Stanley Cup Final when Game 3 went horribly wrong. The Canucks, already without shutdown left-handed defender Dan Hamhuis who was injured in Game 1 of the series, lost Aaron Rome to suspension after a late hit on Bruins winger Nathan Horton in Game 3.
The Canucks killed off Rome's major penalty, but the Bruins scored eight goals the rest of the way and never really took their foot off the throttle the rest of the way. Boston would proceed to win four of the next five games, outscoring the Canucks 21-4 to close out the series with a Stanley Cup victory.
