Schneider received costly delay of game penalty on missed call

In the dying minutes of a close game between the New Jersey Devils and Detroit Red Wings, Cory Schneider was called for playing the puck outside the trapezoid. The official penalty given to him was "Leaving the player's/penalty bench" as per NHL.com, although it should be delay of game.

The penalty was called on Schneider by the referee skating behind him and replay clearly shows the puck was inside the trapezoid at the moment Schneider played it.

Devils head coach Peter DeBoer was livid with the call screaming out "No way!" over and over until an expletive laced "You can't miss that call..." came out of his mouth.

Schneider and DeBoer were visibly upset by the call and the Red Wings scored shortly into their power play. Post-game, DeBoer wasn't as heated but he did reiterate his frustrations, "Points are too important and the guys battle too hard for that to happen. They have to get it right."

While DeBoer looked at the bigger picture, Schneider mentioned the call wasn't even close, "I'm not a huge puck player, but I've been called for that before and I've probably been closer than that."

Although both coach and goaltender were angry at the call, Schneider added "The officials have a tough job. He made the call he thought he saw."
