The Toronto Maple Leafs have added a future Hall of Famer to their crease, signing free-agent netminder Sergei Bobrovsky to a three-year contract, the team announced Wednesday.
The deal carries a $7-million average annual value, according to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman.
Bobrovsky, who turns 38 in September, is coming off a down year in which he posted an .877 save percentage in 52 appearances with the Florida Panthers. He ranked 90th out of 98 goaltenders last season with minus-12.2 goals saved above expected, per MoneyPuck.
However, Bobrovsky led the Panthers to back-to-back Stanley Cups the two years prior, recording a .910 save percentage across the two postseasons.
He posted positive goals saved above expected marks in 2023-24 and 2024-25. Bobrovsky finished third in Vezina Trophy voting as recently as 2023-24, when he registered a .915 save percentage in 58 games.
Bobrovsky won Vezina Trophies in 2013 and 2017 with the Columbus Blue Jackets. He ranks seventh on the all-time wins list with 456 career victories and is four away from passing Henrik Lundqvist for sole possession of sixth place.
The Russian projects to lead a Maple Leafs goaltending group that includes Anthony Stolarz, Dennis Hildeby, and Artur Akhtyamov. Stolarz served as Bobrovsky's backup in Florida in 2023-24. Hildeby is no longer waiver exempt, so it's possible that there's another move coming in Toronto's crease. Akhtyamov, who is waiver exempt, led the AHL Marlies to the Calder Cup in June.
Toronto recently traded Joseph Woll, who started a team-high 38 games last season, to the Philadelphia Flyers.
The Panthers traded for goaltenders Jacob Markstrom on Tuesday and Akira Schmid on Monday in anticipation of Bobrovsky's departure.
